Washington County Maryland SFGers

Hi,
We live in Washington county Maryland. This is our first year with SFG and my husband & I are really enjoying it. We would like to hear from others in our county who are SFGers also. It would be great to share ideas, problems, successes etc. from others who share the exact same weather conditions as us.

Welcome. I'm not in your region now, but before SFG I gardened in Fairfax, VA just on the other side of the Potomac. Hope some of the locals will pop up here for you.

Not Washington County, but Frederick County here. I started sfg last year, and just joined the forum a couple of days ago.

Last year I started three 4x4s put together to make a 4x12. They will be seperated into three 4x4s three feet apart in the coming weeks. I will also expand my garden by several beds. I started using raised beds because I do not have permits to blast, nor would my neighbors be too happy about dynamite going off. You can't even dig three inches down in my soil before hitting slabs of quartz and limestone. I still have collard greens growing. I think the natural leaf fall into the garden has provided natural mulch to keep things going.

I know what you mean by not being able to dig down. I live on a Kame terrace, a terrace that is left by the passage of glaciers, (a little while ago), and it consists of rock debris, and impossible to dig. SFG is a godsend; never been able to garden up to now until I read the 1981 edition of SFG and discovered that it had been superceded by the 2006 edition and I did not have to dig.
I appreciate your neighbours not liking any blasting going on. Laughing

I started with two 4x4s, added another the next year and last year a 3x6 to accomodate the fact that stretching into a 4 x 4 was a tad uncomfortable. All future beds are going to be 3ft wide.

Wow, this great!! I'm so glad I decided to browse through here this evening to see another local SFGer. Last year was our first year also and we had a really good time. We still have green beans, cherry toms, green & red peppers, shredded zucchini(which reminds me I should start making some zucchini bread hungry

) and some okra in our freezers. All the potatoes and onions were gone through pretty quick once we harvested them.

We currently have 3 4x4 beds and plan to expand some. I am also going to do 2 blueberry plants and maybe a blackberry plant in containers this year too.

Welcome to the forum. I live in Ellicott City but visit my daughter in Hagerstown. I am glad you had success last year and I am sure this year will be great. I assume you have read the ANSFG book. Mel has done the research for us and what he says works. If you need supplies I can get them for you. You can view my web site for some basic supplies. Have you started your own seeds this year?

I follow the planting guide in the back of the book. I have seeds growing for Parsley, onion, cauliflower, and lettuce started. All are up except lettuce(just planted)

Are you using a heat lamp?

I use a Park Seed co. dome with sponges. I placed a heat pad under the dome unit. Once the seedlings get about 2" or second set of leaves. I then transplant them into peat pots. I use a home built shop light and stand ($45.00) and place it directly over the seeds and dome. It's worked great for the last two years.

This year I have the system on a table in a small greenhouse.
