Hello,

This is the first year I'm growing broccoli. I have three plants of two different varieties (6 plants total). One variety is just starting to form little heads deep down in the center of the plant when I view it from above. I've got the soil mulched with a few inches of straw to keep it moist and as cool as possible.

My question, and obviously this can vary considerably, but how long from when you see the little head to start to form deep in the plant until it will be ready to harvest?

Thanks!
Justin

It isn't so much the time it takes but the look of the head of broccoli. Here is a site on sfg that may help:

Thanks that was a good thread to read!

But any feeling on the amount of time from when the head just starts to form to harvest time? Are we talking days? A week? Many weeks?

Thanks!

took mine about 2 weeks, but weather (heat) can make a big difference.

I live in AZ and it took mine around 4-5 weeks before the heads were mature from when I first saw them. This was back in Dec-Jan and our high temps averaged in the 60's with lows in the 40's.

We were harvesting side shoots through at least March and some of them would be 6 or 7 inches. I was pleasantly surprised how much broc I got from my 4 plants. So remember not to pull the plants after you harvest the main head unless it gets too hot.
