PNW: Planting by Tradition

Hi all! I thought it would be fun to make a chart of some of the things gardeners plant at certain times because of tradition. For example "Potatoes on St. Patrick's day". What are some things you use as a reference for planting? "Corn when the apple blossoms fall"? If there are enough responses I can make it a sticky for future reference.

I know exact dates will have to vary for us depending on where we are in our region, but it can still work as a guideline. At the very least, it will be fun to hear the folklore/stories surrounding your gardens. Thanks LavendarDebs for the idea!

although it would be of no other interest to anyone, I always try to plant my garlic on my anniversary in October 18th, so that I can harvest it on July 4th in US.....or July 1st Canada Smile

In Japan I was told to put my orchids outside during cherry blossom time. All my neighbors had orchids hanging under the trees, but mine died anyway.

another one I read about in Mother Earth news, that worked for me in Oregon was to transplant your winter squash in the place where you have harvested your garlic.
This would be after you had grown them indoors....

Hmm I have winter squash penciled in to replace my garlic. But I was planning to direct sow since I'm expecting my garlic to be ready sometime in July (planted in Nov) That would give me Aug, Sep, and Oct for growth before frosts average mid Nov. Wonder if I should start a few in early July indoors.

But I was planning to direct sow since I'm expecting my garlic to be ready sometime in July (planted in Nov) That would give me Aug, Sep, and Oct for growth before frosts average mid Nov. Wonder if I should start a few in early July indoors.

You are in zone 8 and I am in zone 5 so that is why I need the early planting.
First freeze here in October. Smile

My only tradition

That's kewl.... I put garlic in on Halloween. I also put in Shallots on Halloween BUT a friend plants shallots on the shortest day of the year (December 20?) and harvests them on the longest (June 21) I've already finished veggie gardening by December.

I put my first peas in on Lincolns B'day (Feb 12) but my mom laughed, tells me I have the wrong president, that it should be Washington's B'day (Feb 22)

Fava beans go in when the crocuses bloom. OR on Halloween with the garlic (only because I'm already out diggen dirt)

Debs.....who believes that there are no real rules, just reasons to celebrate the seasons while remembering those who came before me.

Hmmm... interesting... I find this curious because Easter and Good Friday and Passover are Holidays based on the lunar cycle and can vary by weeks. I wonder if the weather follows... :scratch:
