Re the barrels: are they even whiskey barrels? Our granddaughter lives in Maryland and has been telling us of the thriving wine industry thereabouts, Connecticut even. No one sensible is going to add creosote to a $400-plus barrel (what new French oak barrels cost). Besides, the FDA would be all over them quicker than fruitflies on a ripe peach! BTW, one of the wineries here in Oregon is even making the most elegant, and expensive, tumbling composter from used wine barrels.

What a great idea for a composting tumbler. Seems much better than the plastic that mine is made of.

philct; that is a wonderful variety you have in such a small space, which to me is the essence of SFG for one or two people.

They look so healthy. Very Happy

so far so good... hopefully the rabbits don't see how healthy they are!!!

I went to home depot to check the labels on the whiskey barrels today... There were no warnings or postings about not growing food in them for what its worth.

The barrels are planted in all the time! They are a great size and they won't get as hot as a smaller pot. Phil that must have been frustrating to lose so much in the beginning and have to start over! You garden looks fantastic and your path is very nice! I want one!

I've come to understand that this year is the trial year. If we get any vege's, wonderful, but I knew coming in that I would make mistakes as I learn and I sure have... Rule 1: No planting in March in Connecticut!! Very Happy

Whiskey barrels are charred on the inside to caramelize the sugar in the wood and to add flavor to the whiskey as it ages .

Some new pictures, with hopefully leaving out the IMG tag..

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Untitl11From left to right, Peas and pole beans, Eggplant, cherry peppers, and tomatoes, Broccoli, banana peppers, marigolds and tomatoes, sweet bell peppers jalapeno peppers, and cucumbers, and lettuce.. The part you can't see is: bush beans, basil, celantro, and spinach, bush beans, carrots, and tomatoes, and marigolds, onions and tomatoes..

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Untitl12

Carrots are in. 32 in all and they all sprouted... I may plant another 2 boxes still as we LOVE carrots

Some new photo's... - Page 2 3323_b10

I'm experimenting with trellis along the north 4 foot end and along the western border as the sun doesnt hit the box until overhead at around 1130-1200pm... no early morning sun... We'll see how it works out for everything getting enough light.

Looks great philct Some new photo's... - Page 2 3170584802

The latest round of rain has really allowed my plants to take off... Some are lagging a bit behind (banana and cherry peppers mostly), but my onions, beans, and carrots are growing like mad...

Love the pictures! When did you start your garden? You are north of me but your veggies are much further along! I'm envious (and learning this year, too). Great looking garden!

Funny how that happens isn't it. I'm 200 miles north of my son, and I planted both gardens, mine first, but his is ahead of mine. I say its just a quirk of the weather. I had some really cool weather that didn't get to him.

Some new photo's... - Page 2 04710

This tomato plant I experimented with a handful of bone meal and kelp meal and it has rocketed past the others, although all 4 have flowers already after 2 weeks in the ground.

Some new photo's... - Page 2 04410

So my potatoes have really taken off. I have about 6 inches of barrel left and am thinking I'll just fill it to the top with soil and let them keep growing. Do I cut off the leaves or just bury them?

Some new photo's... - Page 2 05610

My wife loves this look for our side yard. I want to build 2 more 4x4 and 1 more 1x8 for tomatoes this fall/winter to add on but so far I love my little garden!!!

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Photo112

Things are really taking off... I was worried about my pepper plants, but I think they were just waiting for the heatwave as they really have grown in the last 3 days...

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Photo610

My golden tomato plants have some tomatoes on them. These I am trimming and training up a trellis... I hope its high enough!!!

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Photo510

I found one of these bush bean plants slumped over. Does anyone tie them together to keep them vertical??

Some new photo's... - Page 2 Photo113

These are my favorite. I can't wait to see if the onions actually grow!!!

Overall it's been a great first year. I am already planning for next year with beds on legs with the PVC pipe grid watering system... I am excited for the small harvest this year as well!!!
