Weird mushroomy looking things popping up?
I have no better way to describe this! Before we heard about SFG, we ordered several felt type material 'grow bags' for tomato plants. The plants are growing very well so far but we have had lots of high humidity and rain for 1-2 weeks now. My plants are still young & small. When I did my garden check this AM, I found several odd mushroom looking plants in the soil- they did not have the typical bulbous tops but almost looked like pale, white daisies, but they were all white with no green, like mushrooms or fungi. I used an old stick to knock them down and get rid of them. Do any of you know what that could be, and is this harmful to my plants? Thank you.

They crop up with high moisture and humidity, I've seen those many times in mulch. Just pop them out or knock them over.

I get those too As far as I'm concerned, it means my mix is nice and moist and the plants are probably happy.
Re: Weird mushroomy looking things popping up?
If your mushrooms have a scent of garlic when crushed, it's probably one of the marasmius mushrooms. If it is, none of this family are poisonous, but being so small, not worthwhile to harvest for food. My grandkids call they 'fairy umbrellas' when they come up in the straw or hay. Good news: they are breaking down the components in your compost to make it more usable by plants, mycelium, you know. Besides, they're cute. Enjoy. Nonna

I've had those in my new bed this year. In our heat I've taken them as a happy sign that my drip irrigation is keeping things moist!

You're right, Ellie, they're an excellent indication that all is well, but they're making it better by breaking down the things that haven't been 'digested' yet.

Re: Weird mushroomy looking things popping up?
I saw them for the first time last year and had to snap some pics of them. They look like perfect little umbrellas! They are non-poisonous, but as stated by someone earlier, too small to really be of any use. They are also of a kind that becomes really slimy when past their prime. EEEWWWWWW! But they are so cute and they do mean your soil is doing what it is supposed to!
