OK...so we spent lots on all new Mel's Mix--pre bagged. Bought 58 sacks I think? Planted lots of different things. I have lettuce in the same square, 2 heads are nice size, and two are so small, about 1/2 the size of the others. Planted about 2 mos ago. Planted the same seeds, same day, same watering etc etc. Same with the brussels sprouts, Some are a good 10" tall, and others are barely 2" tall with two leaves?? Any ideas? Want this to work, but getting frustrated!! Rolling Eyes

There might be couple of things. Can you see if the short guys are getting shadowed by the taller plants or something else? Sometimes when the angle of the sun is lower during winter the board on the side of my bed will shadow those next to the edge and slow down thier growth a good bit. Especially those that are planted close together. The other thing might be that the mix didn't get mixed up quite enough.

Hope this helps.

ribarr: We have long narrow beds, so the plants are getting the same light. The mix was Mel's Pre-Mix, so it should have been all ready to go, at least that's what it says on the bag. We poured 4-5 bags in each box, and then leveled it out and planted. We slightly mixed it while leveling, but that was about it. It appears to be mixed up fairly well. I was wondering if it was because the lettuce was next to carrots, and maybe they don't "like" each other, but I checked and they are recommended to co-plant. I'm gonna call the company and see what they say. We spent quite a bit re-doing all the beds to "get it right", because we spent a lot before but had the "old recipe". Getting expensive!!

Is there any chance you might have uneven watering? If you didn't have the premix, I would have though patches of unmixed peat. I had a poor performing block that I discovered had a "clod" of unmixed peat.

I have found that sometime some plants just crap out, or perhaps there is something else going haywire within the plant... I have in the past just removed stunted plants and replaced them, usually from a session of thinning...

Sometimes I think there is just a genetic failure, as often happens in nature... but who knows...
By the way, your garden looks fabulous! What a Face

thank you for the compliment camprn Smile We are very fortunate here in So Ca with our beautiful weather. We had frost a few nights, and the tomatoes, basil and eggplant bit the dust. Hoping the rest will hang in there! Been making a lot of green smoothies with our greens...wanna stay healthy!! Oh and we planted some tomato "suckers" a while back as an experiment, and it worked! well, until the frost got them affraid , but just something to keep in mind for your favorite plants!! cheers

Not sure if this will help but essentially anything that does not perform gets pulled and replaced. Usually the replacement does fine. Not every seed is a winner. I spend no time wondering what is wrong, if it don't grow, it goes.

I'm grateful for this thread, since I was wondering the same thing in regards to my peas. In my row of six squares worth, I had one that grew just as tall and produced just as much as the others, but it was yellow. The whole plant: stem, leaves, pea pods, and the peas inside. A sickly looking yellow. *shrug*. Finally just yanked it, but I did wonder if maybe the nurtients in just that one little corner was off or something.
