I read the SFG book last fall and now have the space for a garden. My husband has forbidden me (for my own good) to grow more than three things so I’m planning on 4, maybe 5. Definitely pumpkins and corn and then I want to plant carrots, red potatoes, and perhaps a romaine variety. I’ll be purchasing the SFG book for reference but do any of you have recommendations on seed sources or particularly handling Tacoma’s erratic summer weather?

I haven’t grown anything in my own yard before so anything you’d tell an absolute beginer, I’m all ears for.

This is my plan right now. The side of my house is southish but there's a house next door so the sun there is mixed. I'm ordering a suncalc thing to see just how much the various areas get.

Corn along the backyard fence or on the side of the house
Lettuce in containers either in the front bricked area or in the south sunny spot
carrots in raised bed on side of house
potatoes in moving boxes or big rubbermaid tub
pumpkins in raised bed on side of house

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Corn needs other corn plants to pollinate so does best planted in blocks instead of one long row. Try 3 short rows close together instead.

Thank you, I read about the recommendation corn. I'm probably going to have to abandon everything but the pumpkins and an herb container unfortunately. I found several nice healthy volunteers in my compost bin today from last years jack o lanterns so I want to see how far those get as well.
