root plants at ALDI - CHEAP
ALDI is a store I just discovered when I moved to Texas but I know they are kindof spread out. My aunt goes to one in New York. Anyway, if you have one, go scoop up their root plants. I got 6 asparagus crowns/bag for less than 50 cents/bag. Maybe 38 cents? I don't know. It was CHEAP. ....and spur-of-the-moment...but the solution to my "what to grow next to the fence at our new house" conundrum. There was also garlic, rhubarb, potatoes, etc...the whole "root" section, randomly dumped into a grocery cart in the middle of frozen goods.
OK, headed out to make the bed for them!

Wish I had thought to look at ALDI!
You can look HERE to see if there's one near you.
For anyone who has never been to an ALDI, bring a quarter with you for the shopping cart. You get it back, don't worry.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

oh but head's up, feel the bags. some have nothing but dead, dried up former-plants in them. I had experienced that with Wal-mart root veggies last year, so knew to feel for HEAVY/Fat bags this year.

With Aldi keep your till tickets and take any dead stuff back .
Out of some 40 boxed plants we only had one half dead one . I took it back a week later and picked up a new one which was opened there & then at the till to check it was OK .

Don't you love the weird and wonderful stuff you get at Aldi?
That's where I bought my peanut plants a few months ago and here they just had a sale with plants as well, not root crops though. Broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, rainbow chard and stuff like that as well as flowers.
