I picked up some Coarse Vermiculite this morning...then did a bit of exploring in my back yard this afternoon and discovered some great compost...years and years worth of leaf litter and decomposed acorns from my four large bur oak trees. I actually found a hidden paver walk underneath. So I decided to mine what I found and then fired up my Honda mulching mower and put the grind to the next generation of compost. I'm using old mineral tubs used by ranchers until I can build a larger compost heap. Thanks for everyone's help so far...I'm on my way.

lucky,Very Happy The only good looking stuff I've found this spring was well composted oleander leaves but I'm afraid to use it in the garden since the leaves are killers.Sad

Those mineral tubs look great. Where did you find them?

Ranchers set them out in the pastures for the cattle to lick the mineral inside...ranchers usually have tons of these stacked up ready to give away. They come with a hole in the bottom and a black drain plug. I tried to grow tomotoes in them a few years back and I think they need more holes in the bottom and side for better drainage and aeration. If the blue color is offputing, I think you could probably screw some vertical lath to the sides to make them look a bit better....not sure if they can be painted.
