Well, I FINALLY picked up a 2012 Calendar and I'll penciled in what I'm supposed to be doing for the spring garden. Here is what it looks like.

PS: I'm using April 30th as the last spring frost date.

Jan - I started the broccoli plants approx 2 weeks ago.

Feb 20th - start the pepper plants

March 5th- start the tomatoes

March 16-17th - plant the peas

March 26th- plant the broccoli and kohlrabi

April 9th- plant the carrots,radishes,beets

I already have BS,Lettuce and spinach in the hoop house, waiting to see if it resumes come Jan26th, when I hit 10hrs of daylight.

I seen at Menards a heat mat 10x20inch for $20, so I'll grab that before starting the peppers since they need heat.

So what does your schedule look like?

Hi Madnicmom

I live about 60 miles South of Cinn so our LFD is likely the same or a littlle earlier.

You might be pushing that April 30 date. We had a frost May 4th last year.

However with this warmer winter (so far) you might be OK.

I never put out my tomatoes until after May 5th (I tried it and learned).

A couple of years ago I put out 12 plants (ID tomatoes) April 30 and and then 12 (from the same starts) a week later. The results were that the April 30th produced no more than the May 5th planting. I also lost two of the April 30th plant to may 1 light frost.

So my conclusion, why push it.

Your schedule looks sound as long as you have enough light to handle your starts.

We’ve got lettuce and arugula in my 3x8’ cold frame growing now, It’ll start picking up with the longer days (at least it did last year).

Yeah, tomatoes don't go in til around Mother's day here also but I'm anticipating an early spring. If for some reason they can't go in, I'll take them to my dad's in his coldframe. LOL

Upper South 2012 Planting schedule Empty You're on it

Sounds like you're doing well.

I've got about 21 boxes of all shapes and sizes, around 300 square feet. Been doing SFG for about 7 years.

We have square, rectangular, octagon and triangle shaped boxes.

There are only two adults in the house, so we raise enough for us and a couple of happy no-gardening neighbors.

How was your tomato crop last year. It was my poorest year. I think it was too wet. I recorded 47” of rain during the gardening season.

we hit over 50" last year and we are already above normal rainfall for 2012.

I planted roma's last year and did pretty well, but it was my first year with them. Need more plants! Tomato sauce and ketchup are the two main things I'm after this year.

I'm going with Amish Paste this year.

Kim,

My motto is that you can never have too many tomato plants...........

I’ve tried to grow San Mazano tomatoes for a couple of years, but had terrible problems with Blossom rot. Tried all the tips for preventing it, but still lost 40% of the crop to rot.

I’ve never grown Amish Paste, but understand their less susceptible to blossom rot.

You might like El Dorado Hybrid, it's in an unusual ID paste type tomato that’s yellow, has a good taste and makes a great looking salsa. I had a reasonable harvest with these and plan to plant a couple of plants this year.
