getting seeds

So last year there was a post for a place where you could get free seeds. I read the website and noticed that it says you aren't suppose to post on other websites links to this site, you can apparently get in trouble. So I'm going to try to ask my question without posting the website and hope that someone who did this last year knows what I'm talking about and can answer my very impatient question.

I sent out my SESE last week and I'm just curious how long it takes for them to get to you (or me)? I sent out for both the 6 tomatoes and for the random 6 veggies. I'm so anxiously excited to see what I get :o)

Well, I don't remember which site you are talking about, but, the USPS is slow. At least 3 days for your sase to get there, maybe 2 days to pac, sort,etc, and 3 days back to you, should get them soon!

After you get your seeds, evaluate what yu still need, and drop me a list. I have lots of seeds, to many to list on seed exchange list. I went wild last yr. Everytime I saw a website or store with heirloom or organic seeds, I just had to buy. (I don't remember how long/posts before you can send a pm)

Littlejo you are so thoughtful and kind! I actually don't "need" more seeds. I sent in for the tomatoes because they had a couple I wanted to try but could not afford to buy every variety I wanted (can you ever have too many types of tomatoes?). Sent in for the other random veggies because, quite frankly, I can't resist a good surprise. I have a list of wants but that's about it. These purple haze carrots topping my list. I'm hoping to find them on my next trip to Spokane, the closest vendor of Territorial Seeds to me. I wasn't willing to pay $7 (!!!) for s&h for a couple packets of seeds. There are several strange fruits and melons on my long wishlist through Bakers Creek (every couple of months that wishlist gets longer, it's strange ;o). But nothing I really need.

Betty,

I have a packet of Purple Haze carrots from 2006 that you can have if you like. I don't know if they are still viable, but last fall I planted peas and spinach from the same year with good results. I'll send them to you for free if you PM me your address. I have more in a rainbow blend that we bought, or else I'd keep these because the girls really like them.

BTW, I bought these and the rainbow blend carrots at a regular store, not through some catalog. I've seen them everywhere - Fred Meyer, Walmart, Target. They are from Ed Hume seeds.

Carrots usually only have a shelf-life of 2-3 years so those from 2006 don't seem to have much of a chance..... but so do peas and spinach and yours seemed to have surpassed those records.

ModernDayBetty.....If its the one I sent my SASE to last year with 'win...' in its name, it takes a little while, but its worth the wait. You even get an extra packet, too, and the ones I planted last year grew big and healthy.

They came in the mail today!! I can't wait to try them and see if I can get them to come up! I'm kind of thinking about doing the vermiculite thing to get them to germinate. Is that possible with carrot seeds?

Carrots don't transplant well. I have no idea when you could plant outside in your area? Jo

Oh I just saw this! Glad they arrived okay. I bet you're eager to see if the seeds are any good. If they don't transplant well, then there's no point in starting them early indoors. BUT, you can start a few just to see if they'll germinate, right? If they sprout, then you can save the rest for planting outdoors when it's time.

Anyone know if carrots will sprout indoors?

I was going to wait about a month, when I'm able to direct sow. I was just thinking about doing a shallow container of vermiculite with a bunch of water, sprinkle seeds on top, wait to see if they germinate, then drop them in the ground (like in the book). Not a full transplanting, when they are grown. I don't know if this makes a difference.

But thank you again, I am excited to see if they germinate!

I love January, it's my Christmas! There's icy snow on the ground (It was in the upper 50's during the actual Christmas) and I got my first pack of seeds!! They sent more seeds than they said they would! I love it. Happy Dance!

How is it that a 30 year old can get so excited for seeds? Is this normal??
