Is the the correct forum for me? Icon_scratch I just want to be sure I understand the forum regions correctly. I live slightly NW of Dallas near Denton, TX and it looks like I should be in this region. Is that correct? Thanks, Gloria

According to http://www.garden.org/regional/report/ you are in middle South, but barely. DFW is in lower south. The dividing line must be close!

My guess is you could go either way. What's your preference? I'm just down the road in Frisco and fall just inside the zone 8 / lower south line from all the maps and charts I've been able to find. The whole point of the regions is to connect people dealing with similar issues. It's hard for those SFG'ers in the frozen north to relate to the fact that we Texans already have our gardens planted and growing. Very Happy

Hi Tim, Nice to meet you. Yes - Frisco is close to us.

I'm VERY new to SQ FT Gardening - in fact, my 4' x 4' garden is still in the mail..... I expect it will arrive any day now.
I do have some plants started - mostly herbs, a broccoli, pepper and some lavender. Once the garden is set up I'll add lettuce, onions, spinach, carrots, etc. I already have four tomatoes and four blueberries in self-watering pots and two pots of strawberries. I've gotten a 4 cu ft bag of coarse vermiculite and started a compost bin.

I've been growing flowers outdoors in containers for years because I don't have much time to devote to gardening and the soil is so poor it would require a LOT of work to till it, amend it, correct the pH, weed it, etc. I do raise orchids inside (currently about 100) so I think I have all the equipment I will need - EC/pH meter, soil thermometer, moisture meter, etc.

It's encouraging to know that there are others in our area who already practice this type of gardening. We'll see how this all works out for me. And thanks for letting me know about the forum.

Gloria,
Where did you get your course vermiculite in Denton? We're creating a database here on the SFG Forum so it's always nice to know where the local sources are.

Is the the correct forum for me? Empty Source for Coarse Vermiculite near Denton, TX

Post  GloriaG 4/1/2010, 3:11 pm

I found Coarse vermiculite at Marshall Grain Co., at 2224 E. Lancaster, Fort Worth, (817) 536-5636.
They have a lot of things that relate to square foot gardening - including a 4' x 4' garden set up to look at.

I didn't look specifically in Denton, but I'm told that any good feed & grain should have it.
I just googled "coarse vermiculite, dfw area" and found Marshall's.

Hi Boffer,

Nice to meet you also.

I'm glad you liked my comment about the garden. I actually called today to see why it hasn't come yet and was told they "ran out of vinyl" for the edge and it would be another two or three weeks before it arrives. Now I'll have to figure out what to do with my plants until then. Is the the correct forum for me? Icon_sad Having a vinyl frame was the only thing my husband really insisted on because of the termites in our area.

Oh well - maybe I'll hill them in temporarily in flower pots.

Thanks
Gloria

Welcome. As mentioned earlier you are probably right on that border line between regions. You are certainly welcome to share and read in either one. The more info the better if you ask me.

Sorry to hear the delay on your bed delivery. I would think that keeping them in containers and making sure they stayed properly watered should hold you over until the bed materials arrive. If there is some further delay and you just really need to get something going I actually saw 4x4 raised bed kits at my local Home Depot today. They had a pressure treated pine kit (not desirable), a cedar kit, and a vinyl kit. You could check there if you get really desperate.

I'm so excited, my garden finally arrived last week and I was able to plant most of the herbs and veggies I planned.
I was going to take a photo and attach it here - but I don't know how.

Can someone tell me how to upload a photo?

Thanks
Gloria

Gloria,
If you happen to need more vermiculite try the Keller Feed Store on Denton Hwy in Keller. It could save you a trip to Fort Worth.

Is the the correct forum for me? Empty First Try at a photo

Post  GloriaG 4/25/2010, 1:32 am

My SQG arrived in the mail last week. I got it set up as quickly as possible before it rained over the weekend. Here it is as of Wednesday. Carrots will go in tomorrow. The garden has rosemary, lavender, basil, oregano, sage, parsley, a pepper, lettuce and chives. I put my tomatoes, onions and cucumbers in self-watering pots, and the tomatoes are HUGE.

Since this is my first year gardening like this, it will be interesting to see what the garden and planters yield.

I'm new to the forum and just joined. Your garden looks great! We planted four square beds and a couple of long narrow ones last year, but ours are homemade from wood Smile
