Newbie from West Virginia - Question about Deer

Hey everyone! I just found this site while trying to find more information about gardening using raised beds. I live in the suburbs, but we still have deer. I'm trying to plan now for the Spring, and in doing so, am trying to figure out how to keep the deer out of my garden.

Any ideas or tips? Also, looks like I'll be getting this book soon.

to the forum! You will find lots of wonderful help. Definately get the book, All New Square Foot Gardening, the 2006 edition. Easy reading and the author Mel Bartholomew writes in a very friendly manner. The book tells you everything to get off to a great start. This forum compliments the book and allows you to get personal answers. Enjoy and hope to hear about your new garden!

This will sound gross... but coyote urine will keep them away. You can even buy it online.

50\50 mix of blood meal and last season's cayenne pepper powder keeps them out.

I keep the deer out of my garden and away from my dwarf fruit trees by hanging deodorant soaps in net bags and tying them around the trees and/or garden area. It works for me.

After having some of my dwarf trees nearly ruined by deer, I tried the hanging soaps and they never came near them again. I change the soaps every 6 months.

That is very interesting. I had heard of that but always wondered if it worked. If it keeps out Maine deer, it should work anywhere.

Welcome aboard! Great idea reading the book. I think you'll get a ton out of it.

I don't know much about keeping deer away....out of deer season. But, I do know a lot of people can provide more ways than you care to learn here on the forum.

I hope you come around more while reading the book. And, I hope you give a small SFG a shot in your other gardening. I think you'll see a nice difference.

It doesn't work on my deer. I've watched them push the net bags aside with their heads in order to get a better bite of a chestnut. And that was with fresh soap.

And what's in Irish Spring anyhow. I had slivered a bar to use, and in three years of hanging on the tree it didn't melt away.

boffer.....I'm very sorry to hear that. I can't explain it then. I don't do anything different and my fences around the trees are less than 3' tall. We've always had the dogs so can't be that either. Anyway, I'm not going to tell my local deer about you. What they don't know.....

Sounds like you'll have to go with 10' tall deer fencing, the black nylon stuff that you can't really see until you're on top of it.
