Heirloom seeds

I'm thinking of trying Heirloom seeds for peas (the shelling kind), bush beans and broccoli. Any suggestions on where to buy them from and the varieties?

Also Seed Savers Exchange and Comstock-Ferre Seeds are all Heirlooms. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange has heirlooms and organic seeds.

Order early. Last year there was a 30% jump in seed sales and this year they expect another 20% jump over last year. Folks are growing their own in vast numbers these days.

I ordered the tomato package with 25 packs and the pepper packs with 25 packs waiting to plant Smile

for spring. I ordered Jericho lettuce seeds from them as well, they are popping up in my hoop house as we speak, time to thin them actually Smile

The have fast reliable service so far and they are facebook, they will talk to you there as well.

I have bought a bunch from My Patriot Supply. They don't have a huge variety like some of the other seed houses (they are geared more towards emergency preparedness), but their prices are great and they provide excellent service.

I recently purchased from SampleSeeds.com It's a small company and she carries many heirloom varieties. My order arrived very quickly and there was a bonus pack of seeds included in my order rahrah

Ditto for Baker Creek. Service is great. I placed an on-line order on 1/3 and received them in the mail on 1/5. They must have mailed them out the same day I ordered.

That's the primary reason behind my interest in SFG. I need to be able to feed my family in the event of some sort of significant event. This is the driving reason behind my only looking at non-GMO heirloom seeds as well.

I was just visiting their site and love it! I will be sending out an order later this week. There are only a few seed varieties that I was planning on that they don't have listed, otherwise they have everything I want. Very Happy

what about other seeds....how do we know which ones contain GMO and which ones dont?......does anyone know of a site that lists what brands of seeds are non-GMO?

we want to only plant non-GMO and we are going to use as much heirlooms as we can but we have ton's of seeds that we bought prior to learning about GMO, hybreds, heirlooms and open polinated flower

I like "High Mowing" and "sustainable seeds" personally but check em all out. Fun to research.

Some companies, like Baker Creek Heirlooms and Comstock only have heirloom and non-GMO seeds so are safe to order if that's what you require.

Most vendors that have some sort of policy regarding their support or lack thereof for GMO products indicate it on their website or catalog. I know both My Patriot Supply and Baker Creek have official statements on their websites indicating that they will never knowing resell any GMO products. If I run across a site that doesn't take a stand against GMO, I am very selective in only purchasing heirloom seeds from them. If it says hybrid (or doesn't specify heirloom) I avoid it.

(Disclaimer - This in no way impugns those who decide to grow hybrids or other GMO products. It is simply a personal decision on what I feel is best for myself and family.)

Territorial has taken the "Safe Seed Pledge" which means no GMOs. I
have already ordered from Baker Creek, Southern Exposure, and Seed
Savers but am awaiting a catalog from Landreth Seeds which I've also
heard good things about. As far as specifics go, I am growing Calabrese
and DiCiccio Broccoli. The Calabrese is supposedly best for spring planting, so I won't grow it in the fall. Haven't grown either before... but *am* still harvesting the side shoots off of the Packman I planted in August!

I think I'll be ordering the Fire Starter & Striker and a LifeStraw though I do enjoy a little Giardia Iamblia now and then.

Yes, no fun! I was very ill, but I did lose about 18 pounds. I am still a bit mystified about the connection you were making. Sometimes I can be quite slow about vague references, lol. How does it connect to seeds?

I am planning on going all Heirloom seeds this year. I will be ordering my seed from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds www.rareseeds.com they got a bucket of 15 types of veggies with 30 varieties for 55 dollars they also sell heirloom flower seeds

I love Bakers Creek, I have ordered a handful of times in the past year and it's always great service. My lag time between order and delivery is about 3 business days. You always get a free little random seed pack which is always a fun surprise and it's only $3.50 for shipping and handling. I've compared prices and it seems to me to be the best deal when you add in the shipping and handling compared to other sites. Also, I love that you can read what other customers experiences have been and what they think of the fruit and veggies taste. Helps make choices easier.

To those of you who say Territorial Seed signed a pledge, I'm curious where I can find that on their website? I looked and was unsuccessful. Just curious. Thanks :o)
