SFG CHAT Friday Night 7 PM Eastern 23 Dec 2011
SFG CHAT Friday Night 7 PM Eastern
Howdy Folks:
With the Christmas season in full swing and families coming and going, why not take a break and join in a Square Foot Gardening CHAT Friday night? Just might be what you need to relax a bit before the big day.
What is a SFG CHAT? Well, in a nut shell it a function within the Square Foot Gardening Forum where two or more SFG Forum members get together and CHAT live with each other. While we try to keep the subject matter on the topic of Square Foot Gardening we have been known to wander all over the place.
There are two basic forms for a SFG CHAT.
One is a formal hosted SFG CHAT with a member of the Square Foot Gardening Foundation discussing the goals of the Foundation and also their function within the Foundation. A formal CHAT will also have a moderator to help keep the questions flowing and to make sure the topics are SFG related. In the past there have been two such SFG CHATS.
The second type of SFG CHAT is informal with no host. Informal SFG CHATS have been either theme oriented or non-themed. An example of an oriented theme was the Strawberry CHAT held some time back where most comments and questions were on my favorite fruit - the strawberry. A non-themed or "free-for-all" CHAT is just that. Any and all questions or comments about SFG and sometimes life in general are presented by those who are CHATing.
Who can call a SFG CHAT? Any registered SFG Forum member. When can a SFG CHAT be called? Anytime a SFG Forum member wants one. How long before a SFG CHAT can a member call for a CHAT? There is no requirement for advance notice before any two or more members can start a SFG CHAT. Of course the longer in advance you announce a SFG CHAT the more members you may have talking with you.
How do you get to the CHAT? Log on to the SFG Forum normally. Scroll down to the bottom of the Home Page and you will find the CHAT Box. In the upper right corner of the box click on "Login" At the bottom of the CHAT Box click on the "A" and choose a color for your print to appear when you type and then hit enter. Try to choose a color another chater has not chosen. This helps keep it straight who is who when talking to each other. Also you can click on "B" to make your print Bold. This helps those of us who have trouble viewing regular print. On the upper left side of the box click on the word "Chatbox" and that will make the Box full screen. You can also click on emoticons if you desire.
One note of interest: There is a built in 'time out' function that causes a logged in person to drop out of the CHAT. It is a function of the software and cannot be adjusted. If you happen to "time out" just log back in and you are right back where you left off.
God Bless, Ward and Mary. Be there and be square.

May be able to drop in for some fun. 7pm chat time would be 9am Tokyo time for special guest that arrived late last night. This Ol' Mom wants to be available to make his favorite big American breakfast and gabfest with her jet-lagged and dearly missed son.

Can you drop by with the intent of just "lurking" to see how it's done? I'm not an experienced "chatter" and would just like to watch - well, that sounds a little weird, but you know what I mean.
I'd like to see how it works with no pressure before deciding whether or not to actively participate in this chat (or in the future).

Sherry, yes you can. You can get on right now or anytime you want for that matter and mess around with it. Log on and start typing. Easy peasy.
There is also a chat feature that is a little less formal over on the bottom left corner of the index screen. Complete with sound It's fun to hang out and chat with a couple buddies there and can be used anytime. I highly encourage it for chit chatting and a little closer interactions. Try it out.

I hope to join in at least to see how it's done, but have been home with the flu today and not sure how long I can sit upright!

Just did some testing so I know how it works. Pretty easy.

Thanks, Nr! I went to try it out, too. It is pretty easy. Go try it out if you've never chatted!

For what it's worth, this is a fun thing to do while posting around the forum, too. You can read a couple of threads and post in them while talking to and making new friends. All you have to do is open another window in your browser. In fact, I will plan to be in chat if I'm going to be on the forum for longer periods of time just because I brought it up.
I look forward to seeing some of you drop in.
By the way, how'd it go tonight?

It was fun for the short time I could stay conscious for it! I couldn't make much intelligible input (horrible flu) but it was fun to see everyone chatting away! It was a lift I needed for the day.

It looked like a great chat last night. I tried desperately but it was just way to difficult from my hand held.

My first chat and what a lot of fun. Thanks to the participants. I had to duck out after half an hour or so to watch the Beatles on BBC America....

One thing to remember is to let everyone know you are going in to chat. It is rather hard talking to oneself.
I enjoyed my time there even more once I knew that it has to be fullscreen before the type scrolls down. The problem was finding how to make it fullscreen. But there is always someone who knows and will help you, just like our regular SFGing.
I look forward to more chatting.

I saw that on the TVGuide, but hockey was on instead. Either way, I wasn't very "American" last night...lol.

True. However, if some of us get in there while we play around on the rest of the forum, people will just get in the habit of checking there first. That's what I'd like to see happen over time.
