Seed catalog review
I get the newsletter from Vegetable Gardner and in this issue they have a seed catalog review with links to the seed companies. There were some that I had not heard of before. Also a few don't have a print catalog, just web site.

Dixie, Dixie, Dixie....I just finished counting the number of additional seed companies I have or am planning to check out only due to the Seed Catalog Season thread. How many more am I going to find by clicking on your link????
On the other hand, what a GREAT idea to review! So, on balance -
I'm off to study catalog reviews now!

Re: Seed catalog review
I think I belong to 12 12-step recovery programs.
My name is Martha and I am addicted to:
emoticons
seed catalogs
seeds
spider solitaire (which is a classic addiction, because I don't even like it anymore, and yet.....)
my horse bulletin board
this bulletin board
coffee
the list goes on. And, by the way, for those of you who may not be aware of this, the foundation of any 12 step recovery program worth its salt is coffee...

Re: Seed catalog review
The Dec.'11-Jan.'12 issue of Mother Earth News (pp. 54, 55) reviews the best vegetable seed companies as voted by subscribers to M.E.N. At least 5 of my favorites are listed, along with several I've seen touted on this forum.
A caution, though, for using online, web-only sites for ordering: they may not be reliable. I had a heck of a time getting the tomato seeds I ordered from the online site Tomato Bob (aka Seven Acre Farms), and got my order only after getting Paypal in on the dispute. Does this forum have a listing of reliable online-only seed ordering sites? Nonna

Re: Seed catalog review
An indirect answer to your question
http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/
a specific search for Tomato Bob reveals 4 positive, 0 neutral and 3 negative ratings. I didn't read the details. Based just on the numbers, I may or may not have chosen to order through them if it were me, but again, I didn't read the details behind those numbers.
In general, I find Dave's Watchdog site to be priceless.

Re: Seed catalog review
Thanks, Martha, for the Dave's Garden site. Right now, I'm going with the tried-and-true seed sources, but would like to order from Fedco for their purple cauliflower seed, Graffiti. (A recent article in the Food Day of The Oregonian newspaper touted the antioxident benefits of purple cauliflower.) Noted a couple of other heirloom veggies I want in their on-line catalog had, but it's very difficult catgalog to navigate on line. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds' mailed catalog wins hands down for most beautiful....even with drool on the pictures. Nonna

Re: Seed catalog review
I just ordered from Fedco. I think they are about 1/2 price most catalogs, but their website is horrid.
If you open the .pdf of their catalog, and a second window with the online order form, I made it work.

Hey, Squat, great idea, thank you! Guess your idea gives lie to the old saying: 'You don't know squat." Nonna

Re: Seed catalog review
I love the fedco seed catalog! So much fun to read. Here's a sample of a few of the varieties that were dropped this year, and why:
"2474 Clear Dawn onion: No seed grower; darkness at dawn.
2910 Michelle lettuce: We suggest #2907 Sierra.
3075 Chickendive: No crop, back in 2013, no, the grower did not chicken out.
3150 Aurora Orach: Crop failure; Aurora is without aura."
Good descriptions, good prices, and they list their crops by dtm (days to maturity.) So if you start at tomatoes, the first one listed is the first to ripen. I just love that for the PNW short cool season.
