Re: Are you a hottie?
Camprn I really enjoyed the link reminded me of "Precious Memories"
@ramarks I am using the macro focus mode on the camera it is about 3-4 inches from the dial. Mine come with a scrached lens right out of the box but I got it and am happy.
GWN it is nearly 95 degrees when I took this shot. If yours was in your fall or winter the 135 would be GREAT

I was just on Amazon thinking of ordering one and decided to order a Mantis Compost Bin Moisture Meter also to qulaifiy for the free shipping.
I also saw this and thought it was interesting and inexpensive. Anyone have one of these?

Lindacol; I and many more are using plain wire 4 ft tall; the openings are 2in by 4in. I use 12ft 6 inches long makes about a 4 ft round 4 ft tall 'bale'. Leave one end cut close to the 4ft tall strand, leave the other end with a 2in "tag/open wire". Form a circle overlaping one square then close by bending the "tag" end around on each layer. I use this same wire for trellis material.

A big +1 on the 2"x4" welded wire fencing. About as cheap as you can get unless you go with free pallets.Pepper wrote:Lindacol; I and many more are using plain wire 4 ft tall; the openings are 2in by 4in. Re: Are you a hottie?
Well at last I have joined the club, I AM a hottie . My previous pile I think eventually broke down at 100-120 This is a new pile I started on Friday, with the stuff from my new chipper as well as alfalfa pellets and blood meal.
A bit of manure.

Congratulations GWN .. " Strong belief triggers the mind to find the way " really does work.
So how many more compost batches will you manage to make before you lot go back into the freezer for 6 months or so ??

yup pee and dried blood.

I have done really well this year with compost, I have been wandering into the forest behind our house and bringing back bags of leaves, and now with my chipper shredder, it seems that I can turn the leaves into compost along with all the leftovers from my plants..... very quickly
Then perhaps I will set up some manure and leaves for the fall, to overwinter.
I also have tumbler for my household compost stuff, and it is also doing well, so I certainly hope I am at the stage where I do not have to buy compost anymore for my next years gardens.
What a new level of self security.....

Looking at what you have just posted ..... from afar so to speak .
Why not make a batch of manure , forest and kitchen waste , I bet it will be a better final blended mixed compost

Re: Are you a hottie?
Agreed, Plantoid. I mix everything all together and it works beautifully. No need for another mixing session when it's all done.plantoid wrote:GWN wrote:yup pee and dried blood.

Re: Are you a hottie?
I sort of already do that, however there are many bears here and I have a dog who nibbles on the compost pile. The tumbler is not accessible to bears OR dogs.
I use the stuff from the tumbler after it has partially broken down, as a starter for PILE.
So that is why I sort of separate.

I did indeed forget your bear problems , even though when I was in Canada driving from Niagara Falls to Qubec we saw dozens of them .
Though I was thinking more of using the mixture to be coverted into valuable compost in the composting barrel not in a heap .

Re: Are you a hottie?
Just leaves and grass so far. I've got a five gallon bucket of chicken manure and a five gallon bucket of cow manure, but am holding off adding it for a few days. Don't want this pile to catch fire!

Hi Plantoid
I already have a large tumbler and it is plenty full.
I just have two systems for 2 situations.
After all I need TONS of compost

Congrats, GWN and Toledobend!
Currently I am not a hottie at all. Making a new compost pile is on the to do list with cleaning the chicken coop.

Re: Are you a hottie?
Congrats, GWN and Toledobend!
I'm with you Turan. Not a hottie here! My tumbler is filled with kitchen scraps, old chicken manure that was in clumps, a few splots of new chicken manure because that is all I had energy to pick up, straw that I raked out of my beds so earwigs won't nest there, and old plant stuff, a few cups of the compost tea I left too long in a metal trash can. I had to pour bleach into the rest because things were swimming around, maybe mosquito larvae, yuck. I have in the past read this post but will have to read this again so I can see how to get the heat up.
I have a separate pile that has been sitting for a few years that I have occasionally added to. I need to move and turn that pile and add some other stuff to it to get it going. Maybe I can do that tomorrow.

Re: Are you a hottie?
I am not a hottie either as my pile has cooled down. Tried turning it a few days ago and watered it down but no change in temperature. Looking at it it has to many browns so I have a bag of rabbit food which I will add tomorrow or the next day.
Bottomline I though I put in the same ratio of browns to greens but should I put in a larger ammount of greens?
