Floyd....if its the same 7 x 7 netting I got from BlueSeal feed last year, white corded netting, then its very strong. I took mine down at the end of the season and will use it again this year. It held up well for all my beans and peas thru til late fall weather.

This is exactly what I logged in to talk about! I've gotten Seed Savers and Bakers Creek so far, even though I moved since I last ordered seeds!

A couple of days ago I had my first harvest since moving (green beans) and that plus the seed catalogs are getting me back into the gardening mood. I've spent the morning drooling over the gorgeous pictures, even though I don't really "need" to buy any seeds this year. We happpen to be getting rain at the moment (rare) so I went outside to look at the drip lines on our back patio to determine where I can plant.

As soon as we get back from our Christmas trip to NC I'll be starting tomato and pepper seeds! I can't wait to see what this year's weather brings. Last year we got hot so fast and furious that it was really rough. Hoping for a better year to come.

These catalogs are really reawakening my desire to garden. It's been a rough fall (just went through a miscarriage) and I really needed that right now!

Elliephant, {{{{HUGS}}}}

Between your personal loss and last year's Texas weather, you are a resilient lady to be enjoying your seed catalogs. And, silly, of course you "Need" seeds! Twisted Evil (that's a photo of a bad influence at work!)

Go get'em, Tigress!

Martha has it right. We all "need" seeds. There are so many varieties of plants similar to what we have grown in the past and new types of veggies to try. Those seed catalogs do help us get back into the gardening mood.

cheers Congratulations on your first green bean harvest from your new home.

Enjoy your Christmas trip to NC.

Ellie, BIG hug So, so sorry.

I'm having much better luck with my green beans from an October planting than I did with the ones I tried in the spring. They're almost ready to pick for the first time. Glad to hear your first green beans in your new home gave you a good harvest!

Of course looking through the seed catalogs gave me a hankering for several varieties, even if I didn't need any of them. Thank goodness for The Sample Seed Shop ! I found most of what I was looking for...and of course several other varieties that I just couldn't pass up at $1-$1.50/packet. I love ordering from there; I feel like the smaller/cheaper seed packets are a great match for SFG!

elliephant....What a great way to spend an afternoon, checking out the SampleSeeds site. Many seeds of interest to me. They are sure to get an order this year for some I'd like to try.

For those of us with small gardens (our 4 ft squares) the smaller numbers of seeds is a great idea and they won't go to waste before they are no longer good in a few years.

Thanks ellie.

Baker's Creek came in Sat but I found 90% of the unusual seeds I wanted on SampleSeeds Placed an order so I can put some in my son's stocking. Chocolate habenero, chocolate bell, and ghost pepper. Thanks for the link Ellie.

Yea!!!! another source of winterbor and redbor kale. Had only found them on Territorial Seed and winterbor as starts. (was the kale of choice at the big box stores). The winterbor kale we planted in the spring was the workhorse of the brassicas. Mine is still producing. And the redbor is selling for $5-$6 a stalk in the nurseries for winter ornamentation. We were too late this year to plant redbor seeds for the garden, but next year will be a real kalidiscope of kales.

There is a source of income I had not thought about. I know cornstalks for halloween and thanksgiving but had not thought about kale for christmas. humm.

Debs....whose red russian kale is hanging in there but isn't growing. I know because I put most of the larger leaves into the last soup I made and she has not grown back like she did in summer.

Yesterday I recd: 'The Cook's Garden' with plants and seeds of gourmet varieties for the cook in your family; 'Southern Exposure Seed Exchange' and 'The Maine Potato Lady' which deals mainly in taters, shallots, onions and garlic. I just might have to try taters again this year, possibly fingerlings this year. I know that 2 years ago my Kennebecs and Russets were the best tasting taters I ever ate.

Same for a pot of 2 red stemed chard plants and a giant purple mustard plant

redbor kale, pansys and snapdragons. $15 per planter

Territorial Seeds has arrived. But still nothing from Johnny's Seeds in Maine.

You must mean JohnnySeeds in Maine.

I'm waiting for mine, too. I really can't make my final plans til I see what I need from them, organic, local. non-GMO, and trustworthy.

Quiltbea, I just edited my post for clarity.

The other thing about Johnny's, in addition to your list, is that they are an employee-owned company.
