Crud!!!!!
Just as I was making progress in my backyard to get everything taken care of before mother nature took over, I go and put a nail in my foot. Now, having spent 4 days in the hospital and about two weeks at home, I am later than normal. Hopefully, after all the infusions at home, the doctor will release me to my normal life. I never experienced such a rapid moving infection as this one. It was scary for awhile as they were giving me all these meds and talking about the resistance. Wish me luck tomorrow. I need all the luck I can use.

Re: Crud!!!!!
Good luck tomorrow!
And what happened? Did you get a serious infection from the nail or what? I have stepped on nails a time a two at construction sites and usually just end up getting a tetnus (?) shot. Granted, one of them I took right in the heel and it was incredibly painful.
Again, good luck.

Re: Crud!!!!!
Hey SQFTBIX, just be sure you listen to the doctor. An infection of the foot is not something you want to mess around with.

Sorry to hear of your foot infection .
Get well soon .
A word of warning for all users of animal based manures/composts
Here in the UK Horse muck in the garden , be it neat or well composted is well known for giving people Tetanus aka lock jaw if a cut , scrape , graze or puncture wound gets contaminated with it.
The problem stays live in the soil for several years .
Because of our using it in the gardens and soon to use it in Mel's Mix my doctor advised that all three in my family should have the anti tetanus injection which should be provide immunity for around ten years. Is this the same on your side of the world ?

Re: Crud!!!!!
I work for a hospital and it is required to get certain shots. Tetanus is one of them, it is good for 10 years (as I recall) in this part of the world too. My husband isn't a gardener. Happened to slice his finger on cardboard and in 2 days his hand swelled and resembled a baseball glove, and a red line of infection went up his arm and he was in the hospital for a week with IV's. A good reminder here, Respect Any Cut, gardening or not. A friend of mine buys boxes of disposable non latex gloves to garden with. I just can't do that

Then it looks like that topic is best discussed with your doctor!

Re: Crud!!!!!
As a point of information, adult tetanus booster is considered effective for ten years. If one sustains significant injury it is advised another booster should be given. A good idea considering tetanus is fatal.
Evidence based US recommendations for adult vaccination can be found here.

Crud
All is kind of well at this point. Went to a follow up at the hospital and I need to stay on the antibiotics for another week. While that isn't ideal, they did say the infection is going away. They upped the one IV antibiotic as they believe in doing so, that will kill the rest of the infection.
One lesson learned for all of us. The Doctor at the hospitals' infectious disease department told me to never wear sneekers while working in the garden, garage or where ever. The rubber sole of a sneeker is extremely dirty as well as the inside of it. They are seeing a significant number of infections like mine due to the thin nature of most sneeker soles. I got infected by the rust from the nail and the bacteria from the sneeker. So, I will be buying thick soled work shoes that I will now use routinely. If I can find ones with a steel shank sole, you can bet I will be getting those. It certainly isn't worth all of this trouble to wear a comfortable pair of sneekers. Some things you just learn from being stupid. LOL!

Working tidy and safe also helps reduce most injuries that could be avoided.
Simple things like bending nails over & hammering them flat.to the timber or better still removing them before leavingthe timber on the ground.
OR putting a rake tines down into the ground , pushing a fork into the soil so it stands up right etc.
SQFTBIX did the nail puncutre a bone by any chance or was it just a flesh wound?

Youchie! Ouchie! Hope you heal more quickly now.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: Crud!!!!!
Glad you're feeling better, Bix.
It was 9 years ago when I needed my last tetanus shot, and there was a shortage of the vaccine in my area. The thought of the consequences if I didn't get a shot were scary, but when I finally found a source, it wasn't the shot that had me rubbing my backside. I had to pay $265 for a tetanus shot.
I guess it pays to get the shot when you don't need it.
