We are ready to go but can not find 5 different kinds of compost. I live in Fort Lauderdale does anyone know where I can purchase it. Just finished the sfg book but it did not mention the tropical climate of South Florida. Does this system work the same in all climates including our tropical one. Thanking you in advance for your advice. Barbara Smile

Hi Barbara Appreciate your help new to gardening 396615 to the SFG forum. there are many places to look for compost. Local nursery, local horse stables, local dairy farms. If you have a Farmer's Market in your area, maybe some of the farmers can point you in a good direction. Of course the big box stores may have some too.

Hi, Barbara! Welcome to the forum!!! I think you would benefit by reading this excellent post on how important the composts are to Mel's Mix. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t7451-mel-s-mix-how-strong-is-your-backbone

Try very hard to get 5 different composts, it really, really makes a big difference. I messed up the first time around and didn't get the best results. Call feed stores, garden centers, co-ops and try googling the name of your hometown and "compost" to see what might pop up. I called and emailed around until I finally did find 5 kinds and I think I'm going to have much better results with my 3 new beds. I also refreshed my first 2 beds with new compost, so think those will do better, too. You will just be so much better off if you get it right from the beginning!

Good luck and let us know how things go!

We just purchased Mel's Mix at Lowe's. for $12.98 a bag. It's kind of expensive, but by the time you buy all the ingredients and mix it, it wasn't much more if any. It's under the name of "GardenTime". Might check around and save yourself the headaches. It's a one time investment. We fought years trying the get the mix right, so hoping this will end the problems! Good luck cheers

Appreciate your help new to gardening Empty Mel's Mix

Post  barbara barnett 10/16/2011, 11:29 pm

Just read about the Mel's mix. OK will check it out tomorrow. Thank you for the information. We are excited and are thankful for everyone's help. I will report about our progress. I am going to call Duval county as suggested by another sfg to find out what the best varieties of plants are for south florida. If anyone has any favorites let me know we would love to try them. Goodnight!!!! Smile

Hi. All our local Lowe's don't carry the Mel Mix (Garden Time). Which store did you get it from?
