STEVIA SEED
I have one Stevia plant that is blooming now and I wish to save the seed so I plant more in the spring rather than pay the high price at LOWES. What does the seed look like? The blossoms are really small and the seed pod looks almost like miniature dandelion pod.

Re: STEVIA SEED
I've never seen the seed, but ya need to got some tightly woven mesh material and tie around the seed pod with a rubber band. Then when ripe/dry take in house and store til next yr.

Re: STEVIA SEED
Here is a great site about stevia...http://www.stevia.com/Stevia_article/Growing_Your_Own_Stevia/8077 They suggest taking cuttings from the plant and bringing indoors.
Stevia rebaudiana seeds are rarely available because of production problems and poor germination, so plants are generally used instead.

Re: STEVIA SEED
seeds are very small and hard to get to germinate, you should do as we do and take cuttings now of your plants, we took 24 cuttings last fall and had 22 survive the winter, they were 6-12 inches tall and garden ready come spring!! hope this helps
STEVIA SEED
How do I get cuttings off my STEVIA plant so that I can grow them in my greenhouse this winter ? How do I get them started and when do I transplant them into pots?

Re: STEVIA SEED
Last fall I trimmed one plant back severely and potted it for inside growing. It gave 18” branches with flowers and a few leaves to use over the winter then put it back outside in the spring. The seeds are difficult to start and are extremely small like hay seeds. I have mostly given up on starting it that way and the seeds are pricy and scarce too.

Oh Chopper, You may be in luck, I will check, we have pulled everything for winter, I do have the "mother" stevia plant that we took last years cuttings from, left in the herb garden...I will see if I can get a pic this morning, IF..the frost/freeze did not take it down, I dug up one plant and cut it back to re-pot for it's winter in-doors...shame too it was flowered out, would have made a nice picture...I will check it out and get backChopper wrote:Can you post a picture of the plant? I would love to see it.
Re: STEVIA SEED
I bought Stevia transplants this year. I put fresh leaves in my teas and it added a nice sweetness.
I took some cuttings a week ago and put them in a pot. I don't know if they will 'take' or not, but I'm trying. In the meantime my 2 Stevia plants (1 mine, 1 my DDIL's) are in my entryway for the winter.
Here's my cuttings above. I've got them under my growlight system beside my orchid and houseplants. Does anyone know if they can be reproduced this way? A couple look sturdier than the others.

Re: STEVIA SEED
we took 4 cuttings last fall and all survived, we used them jiffy 7's to root them in..and a rooting compound (cheap brand purchased at Wally World)
but they rooted quickly and grew really quick...they do seem to get "leggy" easily though, but a good pinch and they stay stocky
