How many of us are too quick to blame our MM composition when things don't turn out right? And, how many of you are just sure it has to be the MM because you haven't had such and such problem in your row gardens? Well, this little note is for both of you....

Two weeks ago, I was rejuvinating my lawn. We had just received a decent amount of rain following a terribly hot and dry summer for our parts of the country. So, I took the first chance to jump out and fertilize with some high nitrogen granules to kickstart my cool season grass.

I noticed within a few days that my seedlings of lettuce, carrots, and even radishes are starting to wilt. Why? Everything starts running through my mind. Compost? Was it fully composted? Did I add enough? Mix it in well? Weather? Did I get some sneaky frost? It did get down to 39 one night, but c'mon. Too much rain? Am I watering enough? What the heck changed from the spring and summer? Critters? Damping off? All these things ran through my mind over a week or more and about drove me nuts.

This morning, it dawns on me! It's the fertilizer!! I must have spread some too close to the SFG and inadvertantly tosses some of the granules in the garden. I remember thinking, "Even if a little goes in there, it can't be enough to do harm." Oh contrare, mo-frare.

Remember the topic on soluble salts? I rocked myself! That's exactly what soluble salts do...they cause dehydration by reverse osmosis. The salts draw water FROM the plant itself back into the soil.

So, I need to flush that garden asap. And, to those of you that think your SFG is to blame when something goes wrong, let me assure you......you just haven't discovered the REAL issue yet. It is NOT the Mel's Mix. It is something weather related or something you did...or did not do.

SFG works. Not some of the time. ALL of the time! You just have to do it right.
