Exactely how far do potato plants die back? I had full bushy plants, and now just an odd stem or two... do I wait for it to completely die back, or should my potatoes be ready now?

Pumpkins/squash.. I had an odd problem this year... I think it must have been root rot, as I did surgery on my plant and couldn't find borers. And the insides of my vine were brown/yellow. What I ended up doing was dumping fresh soil over part of the vines that weren't rooted, trying to encourage rooting. Well, some of my plants really did rally.. though they never regained their former glory they supported the fruits that were already on it, and a few did really generate new growth and more fruit. Anyone heard of doing this before? I read about doing it for borers, so I figured I'd give it a try though I doubted the problem was borers.

The potatoes will not grow any more if there are not any stems/leaves. Dig carefully, use your hands, mel's mix is easy to get them out of.

Squash, I tried putting dirt on vines, but it didn't work for me.
