Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
For those with stink bugs. I am trying something new this year and it apprears it might be working. "Ladies Kneehighs" wraped around the tomatos. So far no damage.

Re: Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
I thought about this post this morning while I was in the garden. I saw a stink bug on my tomato, but it wasn't eating the fruit. It was gnawing on the branch Kind of chewing a ring all the way around it. It was kind of weird to watch.
Re: Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
That is odd I thought they only had sucking mouth parts, they just get worse and worse.

Re: Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
I had a LOT of stink bug damage. I had WAY too many San Marzano tomatoes to have done that to each one (or even each cluster).
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
Thanks for the advice on protecting tomatoes. I've had huge stinkbug damage on my tomatoes, cucumbers, and swiss chard.
Is there anything to do about them on the chard? The tops of the leaves seemed like they were wilting and when I lifted them up, there were dozens of stinkbugs on the underside....very gross. Also, a lot of the veggies that they "hang out" on seem to be stunted/growing very slowly. Is there a chemical they produce that does this or is it something else?
thanks

Re: Stink Bug Protection - Tomatos
Here's some good tips and suggestions for organic control of stink bugs:
http://www.gardensalive.com/article.asp?ai=837
I particularly like the one using a bed sheet! My neighbors already think I am some kind of tree-hugging gardener...I wonder what they'd say if I covered all tomatoes with knee-highs (or the one spaghetti squash not invaded by the Evil SVB? LOL. Actually, I don't have a problem with stink bugs on my tomatoes, but I seem to have be invaded by harlequin beetles in the brassicas this summer. Such a pretty bug, too bad it's a pest!

I work nights and have noticed the little devils are attacted to lights so if you have night time lighting near your garden I suggest you keep it turned off.
