Just want to say hi.Started SFG with Mel,s 1st book way back when.Will be moving to New Mexico this time next year,but untill then I am dealing with crummy gardening weather here in Spanaway,Wa.What I really mean is we have had no summer this year!Anyway,hi from Wash.

I agree the weather hasnt been great....yet...it allowed my sugar snap peas to grow all summer long.....we just pulled the plants to replant again to see if we can get another harvest before the frost hits Very Happy

are you planting a fall garden?

Hi there! Yay for another Washington gardener (temporarily). I had to look up Spanaway. Looks like it's fairly close to the military bases?

Yep.Spanaway borders a lot of Mcchord AFB and Fort Lewis.I still can't wrap my head around JLMB which stands for Joint Lewis Mcchord Base since the powers that be combined the two.

And Rose,I did have sugar peas up until last week.Don't know about fall garden now that weather is supposed to be hot for the next week. The question is when to plant?

Hi, psorum and $glad you\'re here$ to the Forums.

I live in the Southern Interior British Columbia, so our weather is rather like yours, but we now have a full week on the weather map that shows not a cloud in the sky and the temps in the 80sF and even one day at 90F.

I have found that summer here ends suddenly. One day the cooler weather arrives and that hot sun never comes back again for many months. So I treat each hot and sunny day as though it was the last for this year.

So you have a year to SFG in Washington State, then off to New Mexico for a whole new learning experience. happy hi

Hi neighbor, welcome to the forum. I'm with you, JBLM doesn't flow. But the merge is an experiment that supposedly isn't doing well, so hopefully they saved all the old signs so it will be easy to return to the way it was!

It's time to be planting regardless of the weather because growth will slow down in October due to the cooler temps. Because you mentioned that we have a heat wave ahead, I looked at the 10 day forecast for the first time in a long time. (If you live east of the Cascades, you better not laugh here!) I see on the forecast where we have one day that might hit 82°; a couple days on either side of that will be high seventies. (I know you guys back east are laughing! Hey, it will be like the third day this year we hit 80!) Anyhow, Patty, it won't be too hot to plant your cool weather plants. Go for it.

Nice to have you join us!

You said you have been SFG since book 1, does that mean you are still using the older method? Have you read the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING BOOK yet? It was published in 2006 and is even simpler than the original method, no double digging, no amending, just create your Mel's Mix, put it in a box, set your grids and plant.

When you move to New Mexico, you can take your MM with you and start a new SFG bed.

Follow Boffer's advice regarding planting now, what we think of as hot weather should not be too hot for new seedlings and transplants.

Again, glad to have you with us and please keep us posted on your progress. Share pictures too, because we love them.

Do NOT let Hubby read this! Every Spring when it starts to warm up here he threatens to move me farther north (I'd have to join the Canadian members). He hates anything above 70!
