Mushy Garlic! Empty Mushy Garlic!

I grew garlic in my SFG for the first time. Planted it in October and harvested it a couple of weeks ago. A gardener friend told me to just lie it on the ground next to the bed, which I did until it rained. Then I put them in my garden shed to continue curing.

Today I cleaned them off (no water), tied them together and hung them in the house. They smell fantastic. However, when my husband went to use one today, it was all mushy. I checked the others that were hanging and they are the same.

What did I do wrong?

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure that's it, though, as it still smelled deliciously garlicy and visibly there was nothing wrong. They look like normal cloves - not rotten at all - until we peel one and it's a pile of garlic-colored mush inside. Mushy Garlic! 601593

Maybe it all cooked in the sun or the shed? I stopped watering mine about a week before I lifted it, I peeled the outer paper layer off and hung it all in my 3 season porch, no bright sun but good ventilation. It seems to be curing well.
