Tomato Flies? Empty Tomato Flies?

Post  garden girl 7/25/2011, 1:36 pm

Finally hot weather has arrived in full force, after weeks upon weeks of weather so cool that all my plants were stunted. Yea hot weather!! cheers

Now my problem is that I notice little "flies" on my tomatoes. I don't know what they actually are - they are so tiny you have to get right up close to realize they aren't just specks of dirt. But there are quite a few of them on some tomato plants, and those same plants don't look as healthy as the ones without the critters.

Any suggestions as to what they might be and how to discourage then from my tomatoes? They are black, and I think they have wings, but they are so small it is hard to be sure (needed my other glasses!).

Thanks for any ideas!

Tomato Flies? Empty Re: Tomato Flies?

I noticed them a couple of days ago, too. They just got crazy in our yard... I assume they are gnats or aphids, possibly both but idk. This post is on a similar topic. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t7462-is-anyone-else-having-issues-with-flies-and-gnats

I sprayed them off all of my tomatoes two days ago, went out today to spray again but did not find many. Spraying with a strong spray of water really works. I have spray nozzle for the hose that has about 8 different settings. I had to play around to find the strongest setting that wouldn't destroy my tomato plants before spraying them. Using just the shower setting didn't knock them off. There are some dish soap mixes people use too. (I haven't)
