I harvested my first cucumber this morning. Its a Homemade Pickling variety and was the largest of several starting to grow so I brought it inside for a snack.

I'm thrilled. I guess the heat didn't bother it. Yesterday 106 and today 98. Whew! I've been watering twice a day.

I got a couple more today, plus another Early Cherry tomato.
From the community garden I brought home 5 Dundoo zukes and some purple-podded bush beans, too.

And a turnip. Mustn't forget the single Purple Top turnip.

Finally, we're getting harvesting time. Today is in the 80s and this week will be in the 70s days. Much more like Maine after having over a hundred and all those days in the 90s. Ugh. I live in Maine to keep cool.

Looks great! I just came in from watering and checking my cukes. Lots on the way. I went on a deep search and started lifting leaves for other female flowers and found an 8 inch long cuke just sitting there behind the leaves! Talk about a surprise. Guess I need to be a little more thourough. Embarassed

Here's my Fin de Meaux cucumbers. They have topped the trellis and the vines are draping down in a canopy now. There are six plants in the two end squares of a 2 x 4 box. You can pick them as small as 1 1/2". I've made several turns of French cornichons (similar to gherkins) and 6 pints of bread & butter freezer pickles from the large ones you see in the sink that "happened" while I was away from home for a week. I have never seen such beautiful vines. And the honey bees love them!

I am also growing Dragon's Egg cukes. The vines are short and puny compared to the above. We eat as we pick those. My first cucumber.... 211713

pattipan,

You sure are getting a great harvest.

You have to always move the leaves aside and really look when growing cukes, melons and pumpkins. You get some wonderful surprises when you do.

I just got a surprise to find a watermelon growing on the vine that I didn't see earlier and its the largest of the 3 so far. Surprise!

Wow! great cucumbers. None of mine did to well this year, but there is always next year! Same with the beans. I like your purple ones.

I can't believe it was 100+ in Maine. Is that usual? Isn't it humid there too? Just the thought makes me cringe! Glad your garden is doing great!

duhh,

Yes, hitting a hundred is very unusual in Maine. We rarely even get into the 90s so we've been hit hard with heat this year and can't handle it well. We're just not used to it.

We have humidity, but thankfully on the hottest days the humidity dropped so I guess that was a blessing, tho the ERs were mobbed with people fainting and having heat-related problems.

Happily, the evenings drop into the 60s every nite so we can open our windows and let the cool breezes in to cool off our houses. We don't have to swelter at nite at least.

We've broken records this year for heat. Maybe I'll get a good crop of eggplant this year.

The one thing this very delicious topic has taught me (or reinforced) for next year is buying early and late veggies!! I would be super jealous because my late season cucumbers haven't started giving me fruit yet if it weren't for generous friends who already have a bunch.

Yum Yum everyone!!

The larger accomplishment is that you actually got it inside for a picture. That cuke is just a about the perfect size for a snack between the garden and the front door.....and some of us aren't as strong-willed as you......LOL
