I've planted squashes and zucchinis at summer (May), but for some unknown reason plants didn't grow such healthy as we saw pictures posted in this forum. However I've gotten lots of male flowers but no female ones. Frustrated, I pulled them off the SFG and planted something else in there. I pulled the seed packet other day, it says we can grow squashes-zucchinis all along the summer, until september at our climate zone in Florida. I like to try it again but will prefer some expart opinion from this forum, for not to be frustrated again, plus not to waste SFG spaces.

Yes this is the last month to do so here in zone 9. You are south of me so I think you can do it.

I'm not having much luck with the yellow squash I just planted.
I just did some zucchinis from seed. I made a shade cloth covering on those 2 squares. They are looking very good so far. We are in the 90's here. Good luck.

Wow! I would have thought there was no such thing as a "growing" season in Florida. It seems to me you guys'd be able to plant what you want when you want

By the way, how do you tell a male flower from a female one? It might seem like a dumb question, but this is the chick who thought beets and radishes grew in clusters. Embarassed

The female blooms are the ones with a little squash and a bloom on the end. The male blooms have no squash.

Its not too late to start new squash. I am in zone 7 and I started new plants last week. It doesn't take long for them to start producing. Crookneck takes about 5 to 6 weeks from sow date===and it really depends on the weather temps.

It sounds good but you know, every plants has their own cycles and respond differently at change in seasons. As we have no snow in Florida, we enjoy the previledge of extended gardening time, thats true.
