Hello All,

I finally managed to get hold of the new SFG book from the library. I must say it was worth the wait and now a trip to Chapters is in order I think to purchase my own copy.

However I was wondering if it is too late to start planting anything this year ? I will be starting from scratch so I have not started anything indoors. I am in Southern Ontario, Cambridge to be specific.

Thanks for any replies and I will keep soaking in the forum in the meantime

Am I Too Late 396615 monarks from another Canadian.

I am pretty new to all this myself, but there are threads about fall planting which I am sure will be helpful.

In addition you are going to get heaps of advice on what to plant, so be ready. Am I Too Late 61949

I'll add a welcome, too.

Look in the back of the book to answer your questions. You will likely be starting with fall plantings. So, look up your frost dates for your locale. Start counting backwards from the fall frost date. Start planting things that will come to harvest before that date.

For example, you have 9 weeks until your fall frost. You can plant lettuce since it matures in 7 weeks.

That's a rough idea and will get you started. The appendices in the back of the book also have some charts for common vegetables that will give you a quick overview of what you have time to get in the ground before your frosts start hitting.

What size garden are you building? Cruise through the Showcase section of the forum and take looks at what others have done. You may get some neat ideas for yourself there.

Glad to have you; hope to see you around frequently!

Am I Too Late Empty I don't think you're too late at all

Post  hankyknot 7/24/2011, 7:53 pm

Hi and welcome.

I just filled my second 3x3 bed that I made over the winter and planted a selection of lettuce and peppers in it. I too thought I might have been too late but the seed packets for the lettuce all quoted planting every 2 weeks from April to August for continual harvesting. With that in mind I decided to plant and see what happened.

This time though I made a note of what went where. My first garden which I planted..... er...... a while back lets say. Was done with no planning and a total rush and has not been a stellar success. I have what I know to be carrots growing but have no idea when they will be ready. I have something that looks like it might be peppers and something that could well be cucumber. The other 6 squares are a no show.

I know this is all my fault so I've decided to start planning for next year already and I'm working out what I want to grow, how much of it want to grow and then I'll work out a nice schedule that will cover everything from raising seedlings indoors to transplanting to harvesting to rotating crops in the squares to get the biggest possible harvest.

So I would say you're not too late for some things, but you can never be too early to get organised.
