Cabbage

[/img]My first year to SFG. I have two 4x4s and in addition to other veggies, planted 6 cabbage plants in the two boxes. The leaves were HUGE and shaded everything planted around them, so my beets didn't do well, my lettuce was sort of stunted, onions were squashed, the pepper plants are not happy..... I did cut some of the outer leaves of the cabbage, but really, the plants were HUGE. So, my question is.....what if I dedicated just one box to the cabbage? This year I have the cabbage plants planted in the corners of the box thinking the outer leaves could just hang over the sides of the box.... Wondering your thoughts on planting the cabbage in one box.

It might be a good thing to do, but it depends.

Mel suggests that by spreading your crop throughout, and not in one concentrated area, pests are not as likely to find all of your plants and damage them.

I have all my brassicas, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli in one box. My reasoning was I can keep tulle (very fine nylon net like what is used in bridal veils) over the whole box. Since none of them need to be pollinated, I don't have to worry about getting bees in there. I filled in the box with lettuce and beets, again plants that do not require pollination.

Also, the big leaves can shade radishes, lettuce and other cool weather crops like spinach, and maybe keep them going longer in the season.

I'm a newbie so I have no suggestions. I just wanted to say how beautiful your cabbage is. It looks like I could adopt a cabbage patch kid out of there :o) picture perfect.
