Hi,

Sorry if this posted twice. I am new. Made my boxes following Mel's method. Used the recommended blend.
Wasn't able to use my homemade compost at the time I was planting. Wanted to know if that will impact my plant growth and can I add my compost during the growing season?

Thanks for your help and information.

If you used the "recommended blend" (4-5 composts made of different ingredients), then everything should be fine. Most of us probably DON'T use homemade compost with excellent results.

When you harvest a square, you can certainly add a trowelful of your own compost. In third-world countries where peat & vermiculite are not available, people grow in straight compost. Not optimal, of course, but perfectly fine.

Welcome, rickki!

Kim

It is NOT perfectly fine. This encourages non-3rd worlders to build subpar gardens. Then, they come back to the forum complaining over their problems....which we can't solve because we don't garden this way in the SFG format.

To OP: Yes, add compost during the growing season. Every time you replant a square, add a trowel full of compost just like ksroman said.

Hi rickki804, "Compost is absolutely the best material in which to grow your plants" is what it says on the SFG website, so certainly if you need to add more during the growing season, go for it. Very Happy
