Worms
Are earth worms a good thing to have in the vegetable garden? I know the Mel's Mix I purchases had worm castings in it. We are still having rain and it's nearly June. Anyway I was out and about digging in other areas and seeing plenty of earthworms. What would happen if I transplanted them to my boxes?

Re: Worms
They will need something to eat but otherwise they will be happy in your boxes. A sprinkle of cornmeal or a little bit of grass clippings will keep them happy.
Deborah....still giggling about the "rain in June" comment.

You have to understand that Utah is a desert state. It's been really wet around here especially on weekends when I want to work in the yard. There has been so much rain this spring and snow in the mountains that everyone is on flood alert. Next week it is supposed to warm up and it will get hot! If the snow all melts at once, things could get dicey. It is nice that I haven't had to water everything for a couple of days. I have been hand watering all my beds. I hope to get a drip system set up before too long. We can go weeks without rain in the summer. When the clay soil gets dry, it's like cement. My husband was working on one bed and actually had to use a pick ax to break up the ground. Thank heavens for Mel's mix and square foot gardening.

Re: Worms
You can also give them a compost cocktail. I take leftover kitchen scraps and throw them in the blender with lots of water and blend it up. Then I dig a hole in one of my squares and pour it in. Plants and worms both seem to really like it.
