Some of my Basil has went to seed. Does Basil keep going after going to seed or is it like lettuce where the plant is finished?
Thanks

Re: basil
If you pinch off the flowers as they come they can grow to be enormous.
This is last July
This is me clipping off the flower from a basil.
This is August of last year and they were so lovely. I have a ton of volunteers this year from them, I didnt do a great job of getting all the flowers.
I love Basils

Re: basil
WOW! I didn't realize basil could get so large! I'm a first time SFG'er and just harvested the first "food" from my garden today - basil! I was hoping to use it in a recipe for dinner, but then I read online that if it has already flowered, then the leaves turn bitter. Three of my four plants had 3" long spikes of flowers already, which I cut off! Should I replace the plants or are they actually ok?

I cut the flowers and keep on clipping the leaves.

Re: basil
Sounds simple enough! So you don't experience any noticeable bitterness? Good! Just one more lesson in my first year of learning how to garden. Thanks.

Re: basil
I do try to clip the flowers before they get too big. If I am out in the garden often enough, I just pinch them with my fingers, but sometimes, that little patch would not get the attention it deserved, and flowers would bloom.
Did you taste a leaf or two of your basil?

Re: basil
Actually, I did. It wasn't bad, but since I've never just eaten a single basil leaf before that wasn't part of a recipe, I don't know what it should taste like. I did notice a little "stinging" on the tip of my tongue though. Someone else said that basil clipped in the morning is sweeter, so I'll clip a few more leaves tomorrow morning from each plant and see if I notice a difference between morning and early evening, and between the plants that had flowers already open and the one that didn't.
