Some of my Basil has went to seed. Does Basil keep going after going to seed or is it like lettuce where the plant is finished?
Thanks

If you pinch off the flowers as they come they can grow to be enormous.

This is last July

This is me clipping off the flower from a basil.

This is August of last year and they were so lovely. I have a ton of volunteers this year from them, I didnt do a great job of getting all the flowers.

WOW! I didn't realize basil could get so large! affraid I'm a first time SFG'er and just harvested the first "food" from my garden today - basil! I was hoping to use it in a recipe for dinner, but then I read online that if it has already flowered, then the leaves turn bitter. Three of my four plants had 3" long spikes of flowers already, which I cut off! Sad Should I replace the plants or are they actually ok?

Sounds simple enough! So you don't experience any noticeable bitterness? Good! Just one more lesson in my first year of learning how to garden. Thanks.

I do try to clip the flowers before they get too big. If I am out in the garden often enough, I just pinch them with my fingers, but sometimes, that little patch would not get the attention it deserved, and flowers would bloom.

Did you taste a leaf or two of your basil?

Actually, I did. It wasn't bad, but since I've never just eaten a single basil leaf before that wasn't part of a recipe, I don't know what it should taste like. I did notice a little "stinging" on the tip of my tongue though. Someone else said that basil clipped in the morning is sweeter, so I'll clip a few more leaves tomorrow morning from each plant and see if I notice a difference between morning and early evening, and between the plants that had flowers already open and the one that didn't.
