Vertical frame supplies Empty Vertical frame supplies

Post  Nanbelle 3/25/2010, 2:40 pm

This is my first year trying the sfg and I am having trouble finding a place to buy the conduit's that will cut them to length. I have no way to haul the 10ft home and Home Depot and another local place will not cut it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hmmm. I'll have to check w/my Home Depot. I just thought they would cut them. They cut the wood. Hmmm. What about them cutting PVC pipe? I don't think that's as strong a frame for the trellis but it may be an alternative.

Also, you can get the whole kit at the SFG.COM store -- see button at top of Forums.

I did see something in one of the posts about the difference between cold water plumbing conduit and electrical conduit. That's no help regarding the cutting problem. I forget now which the poster said was stronger.

I sure hope someone else will chime in here and give you some better help than I can. I'll alert some other "powers that be" to see if they can help.

How about just buying a pipe cutter and doing it right there in the parking lot? I bought one I'm using on PVC pipe for 10 bucks or so.

I don't usually recommend buying cheap tools, but a cheap hacksaw will work just fine. You didn't mention whether your conduit was metal or pvc; a hacksaw will cut both. You wouldn't be the first person I've seen cutting stock in the parking lot so it would fit in their car-Ive done it too!

Vertical frame supplies Empty conduit

Post  homeschoolmom 3/25/2010, 6:33 pm

you're right, I can not find a place to cut it and no metal cutters will do. The only thing I know of is a hack saw that I borrowed. I actually ended up buying 5 feet pieces (3 of them) and unless I can cut the center bar, will have a five foot wide trellis (and I'm not excited about that, I like everything exactly square and pretty)!!!!! And, my pieces only said "metalic conduit"......did I buy the right stuff?

Howdy Cold Country Nan:

I see that you were able to purchase shorter pieces. That is fine.
Just use a double female connector to mate up the sections as needed.

Some of the box stores will bend conduit for you. I will be bending my own with a neighbors bender to fit my needs as an arched trellis. 5 feet wide with the bend starting at 7 feet and the ends trimmed to fit as needed. Each leg of the trellis will be put at ground level over re-bar and then attached to existing Table Top SFG's which are two feet wide. The arch then becomes the entrance into the inner garden. When the garden is finished it will be productive and look better than my house Vertical frame supplies Icon_biggrin .

My wife is from Fergus Falls, MN so she knows cold. I'm from Florida
and know heat. We live in Virginia. A bit of both

God Bless, Ward.

Thanks for all of your responses.
I can only find 10 ft lengths. I may buy one and try to cut it ibn the parking lot. If that works I can buy the rest.
