Nancy and Ward, you have addressed another question that has puzzled me about sunflowers. I drove by a farm yesterday that had probably 1/2 acre of sunflowers. Do the birds actually leave any seeds for us?

asks Martha who is considering them for next year...

I shall make sure to add zinnias and sunflowers to the mix next year. I'll see where I can plant some sunflowers. Our backyard is pretty much full sun from about 11am til 8pm. Yay, another thing to plan!

Martha:

I have read that sunflowers are ready to harvest when the birds start pecking on the seed heads. Some folks will just leave the sunflowers to the birds as they love to watch them. Birds will also drop some seed that become a crop for next year, but, I expect very few seeds will grow as many types of birds love them including ground feeders.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I ran across an article in the New York Times website a few days ago which said that the US army and entomologists had discovered that a fungus and a virus are responsible for the CCD. It was a fascinating artcicle but now you have to log in to read it. The other day you didn't have to. Try this link and see if it works. It was worth the read.

that is very interesting! particularly neat was teh pic shared.

thanks for sharing this information!

did you know beekeepers live longer than the average person?

it was one of those interesting tidbits i've read over teh years. something to do with the raw honey. (we use raw honey here a LOT and i've considered having my own bee hive but i just haven't had the time or energy to actually pursue that idea.)

I found a honeybee making his way across my kitchen floor the other day. I have NO idea where he came from, but I scooped him up and put him outside -- he's going to find pretty slim pickins, as the only flower I've seen is one lonely crocus in my backyard!

Ah LaFee, you are a good soul for rescuing that very hungry worker bee! By the way, all worker bees are female. Very Happy

I am the product of a somewhat overzealous English teacher. It was beaten into my head at a tender age that all creatures of unknown gender are a 'he' until proven otherwise.

(which the bee was, as I either didn't remember or didn't realize all worker bees are female -- at 6 am the fact that I processed that it was a living bee, avoided stepping on her in my bare feet, and managed the mental gymnastics to pick her up and take her outside was something of an accomplishment!) Last night while I was working hard at the garden, the kid was picking dandelions. She came over to tell me that she saw 2 bees. So I went to check them out with her. I only saw one, and wasn't 100% sure what kind she was. I took a picture of her with my phone (one of my favorite features of that phone!!) and looked her up today. Yep - she's a honey bee! She was so docile - she flew off once, but came back to the same dandelion flower and let us check her out. I'm so happy to see one! Now I have to make sure dd leaves enough blooms for the bees.

I usually dont cut my grass in the spring until the dandelions and the white clover are done blooming as I leave these early flowers for the bees to forage on AND they will know that there is food in my yard so they will keep coming back.

On another note, I expect my package of 10, 000 bees to arrive in a few weeks. I sure do hope it warms up by then!! Are you seeing bees? - Page 3 311672
