Strawberries in my SFG? Empty Strawberries in my SFG?

Post  kristy 3/25/2010, 1:34 pm

Hi everyone. My husband and I are new at this! We've just built a 4x8 planter and a trellis along the back 8 feet. We are really excited. We have our plan for when to plant what. We have a couple squares devoted to strawberries, but will that even work? I read in the book that I can put up to 4 plants in one square...will I need to support it in any way? I am pretty clueless about how a strawberry plant even grows. I saw the ideas for the pyramid boxes for strawberries, but we don't have the time or energy to build another box. We are not looking for tons of strawberries...just a few to let the kids pick and eat outside. THOUGHTS?

Hi and welcome to SFG!
Strawberries are planted 4 per square as you said. They don't need any support as they are a low growing bushy sort of plant. I have a 3' x 3' section in one of my raised beds for strawberries and they do just fine. ... A strawberry plant will last 3-4 years. During that time it will send off shoots/runners that will create new plants. These can get so numerous you may need to thin them out. They can be planted elsewhere, composted, or given to neighbors.
Good luck with your garden.

I had just 16 everberring type and I had a few strawberries all summer long, I would just go out in the sfg and when there was a ripe one, I picked it and ate it. I even had enough to make me a strawberry sundae!
