My SFG pic

Afternoon,

Finally had a moment to take a pic this morning of my first SFG. I am quite proud of it! Peas, carrots, lettuce (leaf and head), radishes are all in place and so far undisturbed by critters.

Planted herbs and marigolds in planters, with nasturtiums to follow.

It never fails to impress me how we newbies can produce such beautiful looking SFG beds the first time we try.

It is quite amazing. I am however going to have to cover the thing up tomorrow. I has been raining since last night and it is not supposed to stop until Thursday!!! Don't care how good my drainage is that is way too much water.

I will angle plastic sheeting over the trellis top and secure it with the herb and flower pots at the front. At least there is no wind to pull it away.

Yours looks exactly like mine. Love the 3 X 6 and I have the same trellis, which I am learning is a little on the short side so I wove branches in it to give peas and beans some more room to grow up. Have fun gardening.

I have been doing a lot of reading and I to will be extending my trellis up as well. I have peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, and a pumpkin planned for the back row.

After all fo this rain we have had I finally removed the "tent" from the garden and I have signs of life from my radishes and romaine lettuce. Very exciting for a newbie!

Very nice! You will definately need a taller trellis though! Vine tomatoes, cucs, and peas all grow 5-8 ft tall without a problem.

I had cucumbers and tomatoes shoot off the top of my trellis' (6 ft and 5 ft) into the trees behind them last year.

It was challenging to reach the cucumbers growing way up in the balsam fir tree! You could even take advantage of the fence behind your box as support.

I plant the entire 6 feet along the back with peas since we like them so much. I'll have to get the trellis extended as high as I can.

I am new to this to. Do the veterans of the SFG get exited like the rookies? I get crazy every 1/16th of a inch of growth.

I think they do. It is a wonderful feeling to see the fruits of your labour no matter how long you have been at it.

Will post pics shortly of my garden with all the new growth!

3 weeks in this is what my SFG looks like. Everything is growing nicely.

The only question I have is with my letuce. I have never grown it before and the lettuce I planted from seed back on May 12 is up and green, but seems to be very slow growing and not rooted very well. Is this normal? Will it kick into gear? The big romaine is obviously a transplant and doing very well.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, I think both are normal. I feel like the lettuce takes a long time to get to a size that is harvestable. I keep saying I should have a nursery square with 16 lettuce and transplant the seedlings in 4s into other squares throughout the season because it is so easy to transplant the seedlings in the mel's mix.

I think so, though maybe not at every 1/16th. I have never got tired of seeing things growing before starting sfg. I'm also trying to grow something new every year which adds to the pleasure.

OntarioGardener everything looks as nice and green and healthy as it should. I have a theory that lettuce that you watch grows more slowly like the kettle that takes longer to boil if you are in a hurry.
