Post  peanut0915 5/10/2011, 11:27 pm

I am so excited! My husband got a late start tonight on building me some planter boxes to go on our deck rails, which will be where I plant all of my herbs. I don't think either one of us thought about the width so it is overhanging the sides of rails pretty bad, but I don't have the heart to tell him. Right now he is building me a 1x8 and will build me two 1/4's in the next couple of days. Don't worry, he is securing them into the railing with sturdy bolts, so there won't be any possibility of it falling. I just hope it will look okay when all is said and done! My herb seeds should be arriving from Baker Creek by the end of the week too bounce Can't wait!

He sounds like a keeper for sure. LOL!

I love having planters on the deck and porch railings. And what a great place for herbs. don't forget to post pics.

Yes, will take pictures for sure. He is securing the bolts now and will drill some drain holes. The rest is up to me! I will be filling it with mix tomorrow and eagerly awaiting my seeds to arrive Very Happy

Peanut, What a wonderful guy to build deck planters for you. Herbs are a great thing to grow on the deck. You may be able to sneak a few lettuces in between the herbs and have your salad just outside the door.

I grew lots of stuff on the railing of my porch last year and this fall put the boxes inside the porch when we semi enclosed the porch for the winter.

My railing boxes were full of lettuces, swiss chard, radishes and spinach.

This winter I continued to grow the swiss chard but am now ready to replace it, because it is bolting. Early this year, planted 3 varieties of lettuce and two varieties of spinach, they will go back on the railing as soon as the porch is reopened for the summer.

Enjoy your new deck boxes.

That is so great! I keep trying to convince my dh that it is not so odd to be out in the garden after dark. He actually contemplated installing some flood lights in the back of the garage so I could be out there gardening after dark, but then decided he would see me even less if he did.

It sounds like you have trained him well. Those boxes are great looking and will be really handy since they are so close to the kitchen. Talk about fresh!

Wow, those look great! Thanks for sharing pictures - I've been wanting to do some on my deck railings and was wondering how they'd look.

I did wonder how the mix was going to stay in the box.

Then I turned my monitor 45 degrees.

Thank you for all of your kind comments. My husband has been very supportive and actually shares in my excitement over SFG. He helps with all the prep work and I take care of all the planting/harvesting/canning, and he reaps the same benefits! He has always HATED tomatoes, but once I grew them in the garden last year, he loves them. There is no comparison to garden fresh tomatoes (and garden fresh everything else for that matter).
