Hi altogether,

thank you all for this great forum, I found the most of my questions answered just with the search function and this is my first garden:

This is my lettuce:

My first garden, but what about the lettuce? Lettuce

The picture with the lettuce shows 4 squares with 4 head lettuce each and one with 4 kohlrabi. I have read, that lettuce spacing is 4 in each square, but I'm wondering whether there is enough space for head lettuce. Ours needs about 1 or two weeks to harvest and they seem to be very narrow. What do you think?

First of all, welcome to the forum. My first garden, but what about the lettuce? 654548 So glad you found out what you are wanting to know and that you posted pics. Wow, your garden is beautiful!!!!!

Looks like heads are forming on your lettuce. The head will continue to get tighter as they continue growing from the inside. Depending on the variety you are growing four to a square might be too many. The kind I grow are a short season variety and they don't get as big as the ones you can buy in the grocery store. I also harvest some of the outer leaves of mine if they are getting to be a bit crowded.

Glad to see you back, Juergen.

Next time you plant head lettuce, check the spacing on the seed package, if it is 6 inches, 4 per square is great. If it is 10 to 12 inches, just one per square.

If it is 8 inches, I imagine a diagonal line and plant one in the center of each of the two triangles. (This is not mentioned in Mel's spacing recommendations, it is just what I do)

Old Hippie's suggestion of harvesting a few outer leaves if it is too crowded is a great idea. Helps the lettuce have enough room to grow and gives you a bit of lettuce for earlier use.
