Material for ties
What do you use to tie/train your plants up your trellis?

Re: Material for ties
I like the VELCRO FASTENERS
Under $4.00/roll (USD), for 45 yard roll, in most box stores. Even I can't burn through a roll of this stuff in an all-vertical, trellised, 4x4 SFG box, in a single season (so it may last some folks their entire gardening career ).
.... But if you do manage to burn through an entire roll on your box, or have a lot of boxes, it's reuseable (I just remove it at the end of season and keep it in a ziplock until next time I need it).
My favorite things about this product is that it has a soft/smooth side, which doesn't score/scratch my tomato stems & it's 1/2" wide and won't cut into my plants under high winds or heavy loads, like twine will.

Re: Material for ties
I use baling twine/sisal twine. cheap, cheap, cheap! (kinda like me!) I bought a HUGE roll for $10.00 about 5 years ago, and won't ever see the end of it I don't think. In my neck of the woods, I haven't ever in 30 years of gardening had any problems with twine scoring or causing problems with the tomatoes; I only tie tight enough to support the tomatoes by tying under a branch of leaves and around the stems of the tomatoes plants. I tie it loose enough to get a finger or two between the tomato plant and the trellis.

Re: Material for ties
I use an over and under style trellis so I simply wind the vine plant around the vertical strings. Usually no need for extra ties for vines.
Re: Material for ties
Yeah, my freak wind gust/storms snap off anything more than 6" above the last tie-point if I use twine ..... break line is usually exactly at the point the twine intersects the plant. Even if it doesn't snap, it will bruise/scar the stem if I use anything under 1/4" thickness.
Even the 1/2" soft side of the velcro leave "calouses" where it rubs ..... just my "local growing challenge"
I also have to snug the attachment point & adjust my velcro as the stem thickens. Any "slop" in the attachment point ends up being stem damage for me .

I use plastic ties

They are figure 8 shaped - one circle goes around the stake and one snaps around the tomato stem. They were easy to use, and I've been finding some that I missed picking up in the fall. After living out in the harsh winter we had this year, they still look great!

Re: Material for ties
I can't believe I'm the only one who uses old pantyhose.
I just cut them into 1/4 inch strips. The nylon (or whatever mystery fiber they're made of these days) is very gentle to the plants. Last year, three pairs of knee highs staked everything that needed staking in my yard.

That's all I use also.

tie ups
The above comments have persuaded me to get some of that velcro especially since it is reusable year2year. However it would also be nice to hear first from the tomato queen about her special ties.
