Growing for food pantry

We have some demo SFGs at our extension office, I plant them and help take care of them. This year the produce from the SFGs will be donated to local
food pantries. I planted a variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Lettuce, onions, Green beans, Radish, peppers, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Parsley, Oregano, Chives, Basil, Dill & Strawberries.

If anyone who has extra produce might be interested in how to find a local food pantry, or you may know of a food pantry that might like to register at ampleharvest.

We have a couple of "soup kitchens" that serve meals every day. They accept fresh veggies. You might check if there are any of those in your area. Not all food banks have big refrigerators for storing produce etc.

our local farmers market opened this weekend. I noticed that they had "sow an extra row" pamphlets at nearly all of the booths that were offering plants dedicated to local food pantries that accepted fresh produce. I grabbed one to tack onto the wall just in case our garden actually takes over the world and we have more than we can feed the family with. I am growing a lot of super producers in effort to sustain that hope Wink

I harvested some of the produce today at the SFGs that I help maintain at the Extension office and took them to the food pantry lady. There was 3 dozen green onions, five one gallon size bags of lettuce and two dozen radishes. The lady said she had several older people who just could not garden any longer who will be thrilled to get fresh garden vegetables.

I foresee great things for your future! And think of all the hungry people out there that your posts may inspire people to help feed! I hope my sfgs do well enough to allow me to try to donate some to our local soup kitchen.

Awesome! I take care of the 4x8 plot for the food pantry in our garden, and took the first harvest today: one banana pepper, 2 cucumbers and a bunch of basil. Small, but symbolic. I've never grown anything and now I can even do it for other people.

You are a special young man and the others who do likewise are special too. I just try to deliver surplus veggies to older needy folks in my small town our food bank is some distance away. I try to do some with fish and game too. Their looks of thankfulness and astonishment make me wish I had an acre to plant.
