8 cf of mix not enough to fill 4x4x.5 beds?
I've filled my beds with 8 cf of mix and they aren't quite full. Additionally, the boxes are actually a bit smaller than 4x4 they are more like 44" x 47". I am completely confused b/c I thought this would be enough. I did dig down a bit when leveling the boxes, which are level, but not a whole inch down. I did put weed barrier so now I am concerned that when I plant the roots won't have enough room to grow. Any insight will be helpful!

Re: 8 cf of mix not enough to fill 4x4x.5 beds?
I use 9 cf per 4x4 to compensate for settling.
When we sell our "Deluxe" 4x4 (box, weed cloth, grid & soil mix), we actually give our customers 10 cf for settling and gives them a extra cf if they decide to use a "top hat" to grow longer veggies, or so that they can start seeds.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Settling
I read somewhere that when the blend gets packed there is air around the vermiculite and once the bag is opened this air is released, thus you end up with less volume. I hope this helps.
