question about wire mesh for burrowers - Page 2 Empty Re: question about wire mesh for burrowers

Is there a difference between a vole and a mole? I really don't need to know what the difference is if there is one, just curious as to if there is one.

We have moles, no problem last year, yes the year before, the year before that we had a dog whos favorite treat was moles, Oh how I miss that dog.

I'll take moles/voles over alligators ANY DAY, so you stayin Florida acara, I'll stay here in my part of the world where we have to put up fences and wires on the bottom of our boxes.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think voles are little and cute in a rodenty sort of way, they are technically "field mice" that just happen to know how to burrow, they don't spend all their time underground. Moles are larger, uglier and always live underground.

THANKS camprn!!!! "Preciate it.

The only cute member of the rodent family is the rabbit, if you ask me,which I realize that no one did, just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Of course I live in the country so creepy, crawly, sneaky critters are a constant battle, inside and out, and unfortunately so are the slithery ones.

question about wire mesh for burrowers - Page 2 Empty Moles, voles and mice, oh, my

Post  Nonna.PapaVino 4/2/2011, 5:13 pm

This from a Washington State University publication: “moles are insectivores and eat little vegetable matter, voles are strict herbivores and readily feed on roots and bulbs of many kinds, often causing severe damage.” Having said that, too many moles in the yard indicates you probably have a severe grub infestation (think crane fly) and the resulting prevalence of tunnels may cause some plants' roots to somewhat dry out--which can stress the plant above it. BTW, you may find bites out of the shoulders of parsnips, carrots, etc. that protrude above the ground—also the work of Mouse, Vole & Co.

Just so you know, this is what a vole looks like... This one was fattened up with potatoes for a few months. Although he looks alive, I had just released him from the snap trap. I have never seen one alive

question about wire mesh for burrowers - Page 2 Empty Wire Mesh andd Wire Cloth to stop Burrowers

Post  joncro55 11/10/2011, 2:37 pm

I just bought a large roll of 100' x 60" of extremely fine wire mesh from the following manufacturer.

http://www.bwire.com/

I was buying small pieces from Home Depot and Lowe's for a while and finally decided that it was just time to bite the bullet and buy a roll of this material for myself. Turned out to be worth it. I have put this stuff all over my garden and it has worked wonders. We used a 16 x 16 wire mesh, basically 16 wires per square inch, and I have not seem one of these pests since. I don't doubt that they can get through it, but I think it annoys them enough to keep them away.
