What on earth is the deal? I have gone shopping all over town and cannot find anything labeled "compost". Either I am looking for the wrong thing (maybe it doesn't have to be labeled compost?) or I'm out of luck.

I went to:
Walmart (in search of the mushroom compost...but nope)
Lowes
Home Depot
Kmart
huge garden center (had compost that had chemicals mixed in...no thanks!)

I saw things that said:
-soil conditioner (but had nitrogen and other things added)
-Miracle Grow soil for vegetables (with plant food added)
-Potting soil

So, no natural compost. What the heck?!

I've found that my big box stores have a much better selection of compost once it's getting too late to plant Rolling Eyes

Have you looked to see if your city or county has a composting facility? I can get a good blended compost from mine. Their regular compost is just from brush, but the "premimum fine" stuff is screened and has veggies from the major grocery chains added to the brush.

Green Mamma, what town do you live in? Maybe I can help you find what you are looking for.

~~~
Ok I see from another one of your posts that you are located near Woodbridge, VA. Is this correct?
This is what I found on the internet,
http://www.gardenguides.com/local-nurseries/va-woodbridge/
http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/452/452-230/452-230.html
there is a list of farms in this flier. I am not sure any of them are near you.
A list of local horse farms:
Municipal compost available
this should give you a good start... Good luck!
I can't find ANY compost! Empty Compost
Post  GloriaG 3/21/2011, 4:48 pm
greenmama,
Try looking for things like "Black Cow", "Bunny Trails", Worm Castings, Mushroom soil, leaf mold, etc. The word "compost" doesn't have to appear on the bag. Many types of compost are simply identified by what's inside the bag. And cow, bunny, chicken and turkey all count separately as one of the 5 types in MM.
If you don't find enough from the list, you could take a drive to Hottinger's in Louisa. It's a small, locally-owned greenhouse and they stock lots of compost (although I don't think they carry five different types).
You might check other outlets of those national chains. I have found that the selection varies from one to the other. One home depot near me has bupkiss for compost and another has two or three varieties....
