Black Hen Fertilizer
Hi All,
Newbie here to this site and SFG. I was running around town yesterday trying to find compost. I found cow manure and mushroom compost but would like to find at least one more type of compost to blend into the mel's mix. This is more of a challenge than I thought it would be. I was at Lowes and saw they had Black Hen fertilizer. I was wondering if fertilizer is the same as compost? Can I use this black hen fertilizer in my mel's mix?
Thanks for any answers.

Re: Black Hen Fertilizer
Is it the stuff on this page ? If so, yes, that's chicken manure and a great compost to add.

Re: Black Hen Fertilizer
That looks like the stuff. Here is Lowe's page for the product:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_20017-1321-00051524602171_0__?newSearch=true&catalogId=10051&productId=3118473&UserSearch=black+hen&Ntt=black+hen&N=0&langId=-1&storeId=10151
I will pick up a bag for the compost part of mel's mix.

Re: Black Hen Fertilizer
Black Hen only comes in 20 lb bags (more like 1/2 cu ft in stead of 1 cu ft in the 40-50 lb bags of compost) so better double the amount if using as one of your 5 compost types.

Re: Black Hen Fertilizer
Aww nuts, I only bought one bag of it, thought the other compost i bought would make it even for the 1/3rd of the mel mix.

Re: Black Hen Fertilizer
If you bought enough of the others it will balance out cu ft wise, but if you bought it to balance your blend, you may need to increase it. Either way, it seems to be good stuff. I have 10 bags in my 60 cu ft of mels mix.
