Here's my first attempt at SFGing after previously container and row gardening. So far my plants are the healthiest I've ever seen this early in the season. Very Happy

The trellis stands about 5 1/2 ft and angles back toward the fence another 3 1/2 ft to make a tunnel for my kids to run through.

Gorgeous, gorgeous pictures!! I'm so very jealous of your garden at the moment. Mine is still flooded, but it is sunny today and it is supposed to get to 70*. I so desperately want a salad - your lettuce looks wonderful!

lovinglife -

Thank you so much for letting us share in your new garden and the little sentinel guarding your lettuce while it is growing. I really like the way you used the trellis to made a little tunnel for the kids to run thru. It is a great way for them to enjoy the garden.

loveinlif,
What a wonderful start into SFG. Your garden looks terrific.

I love the tunnel idea for the kids. They'll love it when the vines make that darling tunnel. Great idea.

That picture of the waiting child is priceless for sure. I hope you get an 8 x 10 made of this and frame it. Adorable.

Welcome to the SFG group. We are all here for each other and we all love to share pictures, both successes and failures to teach others.

I posted on another thread (SFG with kids) about a mom who gardens and blogs, and is on her second year of Kindergardens, a fun family way to get kids into gardening. If you have a blog and want to get your kids more involved in the garden this is a great way to do it, and to share pictures of the kids with family and friends far away.

Great garden. Love the fact that you went BIG! I made my 4x12 and those were the easiest cuts I've ever made to assemble a wood project that big. Keep us updated. I want to see your mature "tunnel."

Thank you for all the compliments.

I will be sure to post new pics of the tunnel once my vining plants have started to climb.

Awww......that little guy is so adorable. Kids are so precious and have such a wonderful way of looking at things. That picture is worth printing.

Your garden is amazing. Great job! And the tunnel idea is terrific. what a wonderful way to incorporate growing food and teaching children about it at the same time.

I have to re do my grid with string again. It held up until a month ago when the rain and heat took it's toll on the wood causing it to bend a little and the came undone so I pulled all of them up. I will be able to mix in so more mels mix and replenish with some compost more easily. I am going to come up with a way to still use string but make it removeable.
Thanks for Looking!

Love the pics, lovinlifew/3!!! I love the photo with the squirrel on the sunflower. I love the ones with the kids diggin' for taters! It makes me think of the first time my Dad (now gone) helped me plant my first potatoes as a young, newly married woman. Even as a grownup, I still love digging for potatoes - it's like digging and finding treasure!

P.S. - If you ever discover how to keep the ants/aphids off the okra, please let me know! I have that every time I plant okra!

Thanks for sharing your garden pics. I like the tunnel you made with the trellis. My kids would love that! I've actually considered making one between a couple of beds just for fun using one of those cattle panel arches I've seen folks on here talking about.

I have a question about your roma tomatoes. I have a facebook friend that posted picking 56 ripe roma's from her single plant yesterday, and she estimated there were at least another 100 on the plant with 60-80 beginning to ripen and likely to be ready by next weekend. She's in Texas. Does that yield seem consistent with your plant? I've never grown them, but if I can get that many from one plant that sounds worth the space to me!

Thanks!

What great pics! I love the tunnel idea! I tried a tent version (A-frame) for our school garden. This being my first gardening season, I made it way too small. You have inspired me to bigger. Next year...watch out! Laughing It's going to be bigger and longer, the cucumbers quickly out grew this one (this pic was back in June) and moved onto the chain linked fence. I used bamboo (which grows between my and my neighbors fence), twisty-ties and green plastic fencing from a big box store.
Here goes it! Endjuly2011krkgarden%252520118
If I have the time, I may make a tunnel version going over the walkway behind the garden.
Here goes it! Cuke%252520trellis%252520resized
Our cantaloupes are also proving to do well over the chain link fence, so we may have them do the same.
Here goes it! Krkgardenendjune2011
This is not YET an SFG, but I am hoping to convince the 'higher ups' to add another six inch frame over current one and then convert...fingers crossed!

Thanks for the awesome inspiration!

On each end, there are 3-4 zip ties attached together that wrap around the PVC pipe and the 2x4 rail that holds the fence boards.
