Wow!!! That was tough
I am doing a modified plan this year just because of costs. I cut the first three beds today, took them up to my neighbors and did a temporary stake in place. I did a spade depth dig of the entire first bed area and forgot how much clay and pebbles were in that area. Also - reminder to self - don't try digging after a HUGE rain storm the day before! I did add in 2 bags of manure and the entire bed depth came up about 3-4 inches from the original ground level. Not bad for an afternoons work. I am going to go back and re turn everything when it dries out a bit - just to make sure it is good and mixed.
I went up to show off when I saw my neighbors car drive in, just to find out it was her daughter and that she is in the hospital since early Sunday. Apparently an intestinal blockage. I am gonna try and get up to see her tomorrow.

windrider,
That's a lot of work but the beginning of SFG is just that, work. Once everything is in place you'll be happy to start planting.
I hope your neighbor heals quickly.

Re: Wow!!! That was tough
Thanks quiltbea - if nothing else I am getting my exercise - LOL. Almost makes me miss the good old days of row gardening - Hubby chasing the runaway tiller and the kids picking out the grass clumps. But better results with less space will be worth it, I hope. We are actually going to be using more sf than we did last year, but then again we crashed and burned last year. Have a much better variety planned and hope I haven't over planned. We are growing for 2 families of 10 total ppl, so I am either gonna have too much or too little. If you don't mind let me know what you all think of the qtys.
