Hello Everyone,

Absolute wannabe gardener here. (I've managed to kill numerous houseplants in the past.) Still, armed with my SFG book and the knowledge from this forum I'm hoping to grow some vegetables in my backyard this summer. (crossing fingers) I have a question about watering. I tried various searches for the term *olla* and found nothing.

Has anyone used this system to water their vegetables in a SFG ? Would it just overcrowd the plants ?
Thanks for your help,
Chantal

I never heard of this watering method, but I use something similar.

I bury large open tin cans with a hole punched in the bottom and sink them in the middle of a group of squash plants or my cucumber vines and my watermelon vines. I fill them with compost, then with water. The plants are fed and watered slowly at the same time. When the weather gets too dry, I just refill the cans with more water so they can do their slow watering job. I've had no problems with this tin can method.

Here's one of my cuke towers on June 7th last year with cans filled and ready for planting my cucumber seeds around the towers.

Your Olla method sounds somewhat alike, watering with seepage. I don't think it can hurt but it can get expensive, I'm thinking.
