Seed Tapes

Now's the time to make your seed tapes! Carrots especially... Tear black and white newspaper into 1-inch strips, 12-inches long. Using a flour and water paste mixture, put small 'blobs' of the paste onto the newspaper at the appropriate spacing. Then just put the carrot, spinach, onion or whatever seed ontop of the paste. Set aside until thoroughly dry--a day or two. Then roll up your strips and place them in a zip-top bag and store in the fridge with the rest of your seeds until the appropriate planting time! Very Happy

Don't forget to label each plastic bag!!

I usually wrestle with those tiny, microscopic seeds... maybe this year I'll make tapes!

I think I'm going to try it with carrot seeds this year, but instead of strips I'm going to use a paper towel & glue the seeds at the proper spacing for SFG. You can usually separate the layers of a paper towel to get a single ply.

I have done that and it works great. You can get all of your seeds ready in square feet size and just lay them down and cover with soil when the time comes. And I used elmers glue! And it still worked. And I did not refrigerate - never thought of it but not a bad idea. Just make sure not to plant on a windy day or those sheets will keep you running.

Something to do to prepare while you are stuck inside waiting for spring!
